The Use Of Non Lethal Defense Devices

Except large members of Mustelidae family. And Moose. And Geese.

Has anyone experience with the Hero 220 system ?
I have a real gun but I would like to have a non lethal option as well

2 shots seems daunting to hit a potentially moving target. The issue is if they're really close you'll hit them, but I'm not sure you'll be much better off since it's meant to spread a bit. Sprays make sense in that they work at close range and propel the nasty stuff away from you mostly.

thanks , it would be used in a smaller space so moving much isn't the issue but have never seen or tried one.

As a competitive shooter, trainer and armorer, I've attended several trainings with local SWAT teams.

First the disclaimer: here in Texas it's not what gun do you own but rather how many are you carrying at one time. :)

Generally speaking a powerful spray is my choice for non-lethal for a couple of reasons:

1) it's not only 1 or 2 shots - it's a continuous stream
2) with the stream if your first "line up" is not quite on target you can easily keep spraying and move on target;
3) it's effective if you have several people you need to defend against (we are seeing an increase in gangs of trouble the last few years vs. a single bad guy as in the past).

Just know they have an expiration date on them. My advice is buy two - one to practice with outside (downwind) with first so you are familiar with how it work, and then one for the actual unit.

Also don't laugh, but many stores here have signs on the front door of a handgun and it reads "we don't dial 911". It is surprisingly effective.

what spray do you suggest? i know nothing about the subject. Pepper spray?

You want a big easy to use pepper spray or bear spray. You want one that is a long distance spray - the more focused the beam the less likely you are to have blow back.

Also - and this is important - during super high stress situations you loose fine motor skill control. Therefore you want one that is oversized with really big controls and really easy to operate. The smaller/more miniature / more small steps you need to do to make it work the less likely you are to be successful when you need it most.

*** In some areas it is illegal to possess these spray without first going through a police background check. Thankfully Florida is a right-to-defend-yourself state so you SHOULD be ok. Just double check first.

Heck - if you're not able to buy one in your area then get one of those RAID Wasp killer cans with a 30' spray. I bet that will likely be just as effective. LOL

Thanks

Keep one of these on a leash ;)

Be careful about collateral damage.

FWIW, I would not trust anything I wanted to keep (life or property) to any of the sprays. Wasp spray is usually just a petroleum distillate. Not going to stall anyone.

If you’re carrying anyway, the best thing you can do is practice.
