hey guys/gals, how many of you prefer high end smaller foot print speakers, monitors on stands or even a narrow 36" or so tower? something that would work well in smaller listening rooms, office or even a condo, let me know your thoughts and what you have and why you have them

thanks

I like them for their looks in a living room.
Many sound just fine like Joseph. I just find it hard to get scale.

There are plenty of speakers that work very well either flat against a wall or very close to it, such as Audio Note, Harbeth, Tannoy and many others. These really help in smaller rooms. I use the smaller Wilson speakers because my wife chose them, mainly because they don’t really look like speakers, the colour matches the room (we have a silk silver wallpaper and grey/silver blinds over the window windows) and the pointy ends make them look much smaller than a rectangular box. The lack of any defining features and curved edges make them fade away into the space as much as can reasonably be expected. A stand mount speaker is actually more intrusive because there are more edges and details that focus the eye, whereas the Wilson’s are just a grey blob with a nice paint job.

The room is 18’ x 14’ with subtle acoustic treatments. It has a fantastic warm but lively sound. The speakers go down to 32 Hz -3dB which is ideal for me and for the room. One of the key tests for me is to have a really good twang from a stand-up bass. I was listening to these two recordings yesterday, the first one does not over excite the room even though it’s very dynamic and a bit of a bright recording, the second has really good bass.

I tried the Focal Diablo Color EVO speakers, I can see why people like them, but I found them incredibly shouty and “hifi”, not my kind of sound at all.

My dealer thought my wife would like some of the smaller Franco Serblin or Sonus Faber, they have a small foot-print and pretty, but she didn’t like the wood colour.

anyone else, thoughts on high end monitors, smaller towers

I love my Sonner Legato Unum's and prefer small standmounts in smallish rooms.

Among the best full-range, small-form-factor speakers I know is the Von Schweikert Endeavor, recently renamed model ONE. With a smooth 4ohm nominal load, the One works well with any high-quality 60-watt solid-state or tube amplifier yet can accommodate considerably more. The One is offered in walnut, or virtually any color automotive finish one can think of. The speaker is built and assembled by a small team of dedicated builders in Riverside, California. In full disclosure, I am a Strategic Advisor to the Company, so the usual grains of salt apply.

Check out their website and the recent TAS YouTube review linked below, which provides excellent insight into the speaker's performance and visual appeal.

I have a couple of smaller towers and stand mounts. All of them are integrated with subwoofers. The solid foundation really helps to improve the overall experience. Revel F-206's JBL L-5's and JBL 308 Mk 2's JBL 4208's

Sonus Faber Maxima Amator. Gorgeous, handmade, walnut cabinets, and a high quality sound that has bass response down to 35hz. I have been listening to these for a few months. Amazing for a small speaker. One of the products of the year over at Absolute Sound.
