SimAudio CP-8

I gather it's based on the Denon. Despite so few hi-end processors out there, it's still way under the radar. I bought my now sold CBIII as a demo from a dealer who was dropping Theta and picking up the Sim.

Simaudio has a very good, well earned reputation so I'm thinking that it should be a good unit. However, for that kind of money and an extra space in the rack, and also given that the system must be a mixed use one (movies and music), I would opt for a Denon, Integra, Anthem or Marantz pre/pro and a very good linestage with HT Bypass. I got stung before when I bought my Proceed AVP2 which promised to be modularly upgradable. We all know what happened to Proceed. Then I hear about all the problems folks are having with upgrade packages for their high priced pre/pros, such as rblnr whose CBIII is now way behind schedule. I've come to view promises of upgradability and "future proof-ness" with great skepticism. That is unless they actually have psychics on the payroll ;)

I'd go for the good linestage because at least that won't turn obsolete overnight. I'm also into tubes in a major way so it would be a tubed one. As for the pre/pro, well I figure if it does become obsolete the sting won't be nearly as bad. I'm probably not the only guy who thinks this way so that could explain the withdrawal of so many high end companies from all but multichannel amplifiers.

My local dealer tells me that the audio section sounds much like their 2 ch preamps on which it was based. Hadn't had a chance to compare as he wasn't stocking them at the $20K level.

Knowing SimAudio, I would not doubt that at all. It's all these newfangled audio formats and the ever evolving HDMI standards that bugs the hell out of me :(
