Recent Concerts You've Enjoyed

Thought this might be a fun thread and a way to find out about acts on tour.

My wife and I saw the Smoke Fairies at the Tractor Tavern last evening as the opening act for Rasputina. The Smoke Fairies are a 'folk blues' duo from Wales and have been described as "Bob Dylan's dream." I thought that their debut release "Through Low Light and Trees" was one of last year's best. It was just the two principles singing and playing guitar. Really terrific concert with excellent acoustics and thankfully not too loud.

If you are ever in Seattle, the Tractor Tavern is a great venue in the Ballard neighborhood. Very fun people watching...I think my wife and I were the only ones without tattoos! I got to chat with them after their set and had my LP signed. I love the lilting Welsh accents!

Here's a video of "Hotel Room" from their debut LP:

Al D is IMHO one of the top three or four players in the world today. His speed and technical ability is truly amazing. Glad that you thought it was a great concert.

Davey, it was just sensational. His tone is exquisite and the relaxed..and yet..intense interplay with the band was incredible.

This show rivals seeing Jeff Beck at his very best for me. And I did not expect that, given that Di Meola's music can be overly complex for some. But there
was such a fantastic spirit to the show.

Have gone to a lot of live concerts this year including two of dudamel (5th of Beethoven and Mahler), two of Simon Rattle with Berlin Philharmonic (Mahler 2nd, and sibelius 5, 6, 7), but the best so far has been the Scherezade I was at last month. Spiritofmusic was also at the concert.

Also saw an excellent one with arias from the baroque era, one with little known Mozart arias, a couple of jazz concerts. Most of the classical concerts have been at the Barbican or the royal festival hall

I am really looking forward to Mussorgsky's pictures at an exhibition next weekend.

In NYC this weekend.

Caught The Count Basie Band at Birdland and The Billy Harper Quintet at Smoke. Of course, I bought a couple of CDs and the LP...Great little club!!

2 great shows. Smoke is a great but tiny club. If I was home I would ave been to the Basie Show. Saw Jane Monheit at Ronnie Scott's Friday night. She is sooooooooo much better live. A great show. My wife even loved it and she didn't want go. Saw the organ extravaganza at St. Martins in the Field Thursday night. Another fine evening of music. Tomorrow night is Barber's Adagio at the same locale and jazz in the crypt Wednesday night. Pics when we get back.

Tomorrow there is a nice aria gala at Cadogan Hall in Sloane Square. They are playing Beethoben's 9th and Scherezade there on 20th and 22nd, and Bernard Haitnik is doing the 9th at barbican on the 21st, and Nigel Kennedy is playing at East Croydon on the 22nd, if you are still around in London then

St. Martin's in the Field, Trafalgar Square, London on May 7, 2015. The King of Instruments: An Organ Spectacular. Two organs with chorus.

Jane Monheit at Ronnie Scott's London. Great show. My wife was suprised she was that good! Her records don't do her justice. Sorry but no pics allowed inside. Bummer. Pic taken outside after the show.

Northern Lights Symphony Orchestra Barber Adagio By Candlelight. St. Martin's In The Field, London. May 12, 2015. Works by Barber, Elgar, Glazunov, Rawsthorne and Grieg. Hearing Barber's Adagio for Strings in a small church with great acoustics was fantastic. Not a dry eye in the house! The Saxophone Concerto by Glazunov was a real treat as was Grieg's Holberg Suite. A GREAT night.

We attended a jazz show and a dance party broke out. Another great evening. Too bad we had to return home.

Saw Sufjan Stevens Thursday a week ago. Did his latest album straight through without a break, spoke a little regarding his childhood and the loss of his parents, played 4 more then did a 5 song encore. See this guy if you can. He's worth the price of admission. Superb songwriter and excellent musician.

Christian McBride Trio

Enjoyed a wonderful Sunday afternoon listening to the Christian McBride Trio:

Premier bassist Christian McBride introduces his latest working group: a trio, fully embracing at age 41 his role as standard-bearer and mentor. Pianist Christian Sands and drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr.— both younger, emerging artists—have been performing with McBride’s smallest group for about three years, honing their trio conception to a fine point of expressive depth and nuance with select performances around the world.

Saw them in Philly a couple of months ago. Great show. Great trio. They will be at The Jazz Standard at the end of summer.

Just got home from hearing Arturo Sandoval who played trumpet (of course!), sang a tune in honor of his mentor and friend Dizzy Gillespie, played percussion and performed a beautiful rendition of "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" on piano. Amazing!
