Recent Concerts You've Enjoyed

Thought this might be a fun thread and a way to find out about acts on tour.

My wife and I saw the Smoke Fairies at the Tractor Tavern last evening as the opening act for Rasputina. The Smoke Fairies are a 'folk blues' duo from Wales and have been described as "Bob Dylan's dream." I thought that their debut release "Through Low Light and Trees" was one of last year's best. It was just the two principles singing and playing guitar. Really terrific concert with excellent acoustics and thankfully not too loud.

If you are ever in Seattle, the Tractor Tavern is a great venue in the Ballard neighborhood. Very fun people watching...I think my wife and I were the only ones without tattoos! I got to chat with them after their set and had my LP signed. I love the lilting Welsh accents!

Here's a video of "Hotel Room" from their debut LP:

Stevie Wonder - playing the entire "Songs in the Key of Life" album (one of the best albums of all time in my opinion), and a few other classics. A once in a lifetime show. Very inspired performance. Still on top of his game.

One of the best concerts I ever saw was Stevie Wonder back at the old Devon Music Fair in suburban Philly. a 3000 seat venue in the round. I think it was the late 1980's. Almost a religious experience.

Religious experience concerts are always small venues (in my experience). I had two - twice Prince afterconcert in 1,000 capacity club in the Netherlands.

edorr, I will keep my eyes and ears open when I am in Amsterdam next week! The wife and I are attending 2 classical concerts while there but who knows, maybe Prince will show up. Saw him once at the old Spectrum in Philly back in 1984 I think and he put on a helluva show with Sheila E. as the opening act.

Amsterdam Concertgebouw I presume? First aftershow Prince did was in club Paradiso - very nice venue, but probably not much going on of musical interest to you next week. For something more experimental (Jazz) you may want to check out the "Bimhuis".

Edorr, you presume correctly. I would check out the Bimhuis but my wife is basically only into classical. We are also seeing The Magic Flute at the Zurich Opera House. I am really looking forward to that.

Sounds like a great trip. Once you're in Zurich over halfway between Amsterdam and Milan, you might as well extend your musical pilgrimage to "La Scala", or branch off east to the Mecca of classical music Vienna....

I'm heading to Amsterdam in three weeks myself, with a trip to Marrakesh and New Years in Paris tagged on.

Was in Vienna last December along with Prague, Budapest and a few other towns. Experienced some great music venues in all three places, Prague in particular. Milan is not on this years agenda. Too far off where we will be traveling. Maybe next year.

Philly Pops Christmas Spectacular 12/6/14 at Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center in Philly. A special night for us as my son is in the Philly Pops Chorus. Incredible experience for him at that age to perform this month night after night at such a great venue and with these superb musicians, especially Philly's own Hugh Panaro who gained fame as The Phantom on Broadway. He was incredible. Oh and Hugh was too!:D My son is 4th row, 9th in from the right in case anyone is remotely interested!

Boris Giltburg at Kleine Zaal at The Concertgebouw in Amsterdam on December 13, 2014. This is the best solo piano classical performance I have ever heard. Mr. Giltburg's technique, passion, energy and touch, his lyricism is superb. The sound of the small Kleine Zaal is amazing. I have not heard a Steinway sound better than it did that night.

Bach's Brandenburg Concerto at the Grote Zaal at The Concertgebouw on December 14, 2014. That was one long performance!

Mozart's Magic Flute at the Zurich Opera House on December 20, 2014. Modern costumes and sets. The sound of Mozart in this hall was sublime! That's all for now.

Saw X twice awhile ago at City Winery in NYC -- great shows. In the same vein, seeing Dave and Phil Alvin (formerly The Blasters) there soon too. Looking forward to Beth Hart at Gramercy Theater in a couple of months; she is one of the great under-the-radar live perfomers/talents out there. She's got something extra.
