Report: Rockets offering trio to clear cap space

Looking to acquire Jimmy Butler from the 76ers in a sign-and-trade, the Rockets have offered Clint Capela, Eric Gordon and P.J. Tucker individually to teams with cap space, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Zach Lowe.

The Rockets are hoping to team Butler with Chris Paul and James Harden in hopes of making a deeper postseason run in 2019-20. But as Wojnarowski points out, Philadelphia remains optimistic it can re-sign both Jimmy Butler and Tobias Harris.

I just read the Celtics could be in the mix as the 3rd team in facilitating this Butler to Houston thing. Celtics take in Capella, Butler to Houston, and perhaps a guy like Marcus Smart to Phily. Interesting.

Report: LeBron James giving up his No. 23 to Anthony Davis

From NBA media reports

Wow, this is big news. The King is giving up number 23. Yawn

It appears Lakers forward LeBron James will be going with a different number for the 2019-20 season. James has decided to give his No. 23 to his potentially new teammate Anthony Davis, according to Yahoo Sports' Chris Haynes.

Davis, who has worn No. 23 in each of his seven years with the Pelicans before being reportedly dealt to the Lakers on June 15, wore the same number in his lone season at Kentucky.

But what about James? Could he go back to No. 6, which he wore during his four seasons in Miami and the Olympics? It's also the number James practices in. Los Angeles has 11 retired numbers, but No. 6 isn't one of them.

James tweeted out the number "6" on Thursday night, likely referencing the number he's switching to.

James secured the NBA's most popular jersey last season, and as a team, the Lakers sold the most merchandise. The amount of Anthony Davis' jerseys sold will likely skyrocket in the Los Angeles market, especially considering his Pelicans No. 23 jersey wasn't among the top 15 in sales.

If LeBron were a true team mate he would have given Davis some of the $4M back he relinquished in order to make cap space for the team. I haven't seen LeBron make concessions but then again a King doesn't need to

The Lakers have $32M in cap space and can afford to sign Kawhi

This for me is absolutely mind boggling as not only would this be a bought team but even in the absence of LeBron it has "championship" written all over it

The question remains does this only add to the Lakers dysfunction as IMO Kawhi is a far superior player than James now at this point in both players careers. So whose team would it be.

When James went to Miami it was Wade's team until the King took over

Now if this became Kawhi's team I could buy into that but I am afraid that as long as the King is on his court he will likely still be calling shots which IMO will only sully the relationship between him and Leonard and possibly even Davis

Well Phil. here is the news everyone has been awaiting...The world according to Stephen A.

Stephen A.: Kawhi is 'seriously considering' the Lakers

http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=27073807
Steve,
I was just thinking of that possibility and if can really happen. These 3 must be scoring 35 points each game since even with Kawhi, the Raptors needed double figure scoring from van Vleet and Ibaka from bench. And in some games, the lead of the Raptors was only a few points. Interesting win the Lakers bench will be, and they will still need 1 more player for their first five, if Kawhi Signs in, an Incredible event.

I believe so too. What did James did to Kyrie that Kyrie wanted out? Poor Kawhi. He could just end up being the whipping boy of LeBron who is the self proclaimed court general, ring leader, coach, and GM.

I feel the missing part of the puzzle is D'Angelo Russell. I always liked him when he was a Laker but he was immature then and left some bad memories. But he is now an all star PG and could be the glue that keeps a team of this nature on solid ground

If Kawhi and Davis sign contracts I am still betting one a 2 year contract with a player option as 2 years might be all that is required for the rats to desert ship. Remember the Lakers have no 1st round picks for many years

I like this rule change and feel it has been a long time coming especially when compared to other sports

NBA will allow coach's challenges this summer

Zach LoweESPN Senior Writer

The NBA will implement a coach's challenge at the upcoming summer leagues and anticipates using the rule during 2019-20 regular season as part of a pilot program, per a memo sent to teams this morning and obtained by ESPN.

Coaches will get one challenge per game, and they will lose it even if the challenge is successful, according to the memo. They can use it to challenge only called fouls, goaltending, basket interference, and plays when the ball is knocked out of bounds, the memo says. The league has tested this version of the challenge system in the G League over the past two seasons.

Coaches must have a timeout remaining to use a challenge. The team must call a timeout immediately after the event they would like to challenge, and the coach must "twirl his/her index finger toward the referees" to signal for the challenge, the memo states. If the challenge is successful, the team retains the timeout it used to stop play. If the challenge is unsuccessful, they lose that timeout.

The crew chief among the referees will determine the outcome of challenges involving called fouls. The NBA Replay Center will decide all other challenges. Any technical flagrant fouls that occur during or "immediately after" the call being challenged will stand regardless of the outcome of the challenge, the memo says.

Both the league office and the NBA's competition committee, composed of coaches, front-office executives, and players, are recommending the league's board of governors approve the rule for the 2019-20 season "on a trial basis," the memo says.

"We anticipate this rule will be in effect in in the NBA next season as part of a one-year pilot program," the memo states.

When the league and its teams discussed the challenge concept at the general managers meetings in May in Chicago, there was some trepidation about allowing coaches to challenge called fouls, per sources who spoke to ESPN.com at the time. Backers of a more expansive challenge have apparently won that argument for now. Coaches will not be able to challenge uncalled fouls. Any attempt to expand the challenge rule into that area would result in a bigger, and likely longer, fight, sources have said.

Also in the memo:

The NBA during summer leagues will use the G League's "transition take foul" rule which penalizes intentional fouls that stop fast-break opportunities -- but do not qualify as clear path fouls. The fouled team will get one free throw -- to be attempted by a player of their choice from among the five in the game at the time of the foul -- and retain possession of the ball, the memo states. There has been agitation for the NBA to adopt this rule.

The NBA during the Las Vegas summer league will experiment with a so-called "connected basketball" -- an official NBA game ball with a motion-tracking chip inside of it.

Approving the proposed challenge rule for use in the 2019-20 regular-season would require support from two-thirds of the league's teams in a formal vote of the board of governors. The league will submit it to a vote before the full board on July 9th. "Based on the feedback we have received, we expect it to be adopted," the memo says.

Raptors get last interview with Kawhi.

My bet is he gets his max 2 year deal with the Raptors and stays put. The thought of Kawhi being merely a court jester for the King just doesn't ring right. I bet he stays put and uses the interviews elsewhere as leverage for his final interview

LeBron has been violating lots of league rules since he came in so this is just a little parking ticket, if ever.

Interesting bits about Kawhi. Max thinks that if he lands in Clippers Nation, they will be champions. And one guy there believes Kawhi won't like playing 2nd fiddle to James, even in the team bus.

Report: Durant to meet with four teams
As many anticipated, Kevin Durant will explore his options and meet with a few teams when free agency opens up on June 30. That list of teams has reportedly been made known. ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports the Warriors superstar "plans to engage" with four franchises: The Brooklyn Nets, LA Clippers, New York Knicks and Golden State Warriors.

Here's more from Wojnarowski:

There's expected to be some combination of face-to-face meetings and communications by other means with Durant and his business manager, Rich Kleiman, front-office sources told ESPN.

Durant's decision-making process could extend well into next week, league sources told ESPN.

I think Durant has to interview with the Warriors. Will any team pay him a max contract when he's out for the year and suddenly an unproven commodity
