Chet Holmgren out for season: What a foot injury means for the Oklahoma City Thunder and their star rookie

What will be the impact of Chet Holmgren's season-ending foot injury?

The Oklahoma City Thunder announced Thursday that the No. 2 pick of this year's NBA draft will miss his entire first campaign as a pro after suffering a Lisfranc injury to his right foot while playing in the CrawsOver Pro-Am event on Saturday.

Although Holmgren's untimely injury costs him a chance to play and Thunder fans the chance to see their franchise's highest draft pick since taking Kevin Durant at No. 2 before moving to Oklahoma City, the track record of other top picks sidelined by injury during their first season suggests it shouldn't be a major detriment to his development.

Playing without Holmgren could, however, affect the Thunder's outlook for the coming season. Without him, Oklahoma City becomes more likely to spend another year battling for lottery position despite having a handful of core players already in place.

Terrible news for Holmgren and OKC. :(

Last year I thought was a breakout season for the Wolves. I found this an interesting read. The Wolves could prove to be a very good team this year

and more about Beverly and Westbrook.....Stephen A might have it right.....

Are Lakers Less or More Likely to Trade Russell Westbrook After Pat Bev Deal?

But the Lakers should be realistic. If the goal is to win with James with two years fully promised, hoping on a half-baked cap space plan for half of that time is unwise. If there's a move to give the 2022-23 Lakers a chance to improve dramatically, cap room in 2023 shouldn't be an impediment.

In terms of sacrificing future firsts (likely 2027 and 2029), the danger is that James and Davis may be long gone by then. Los Angeles would only have first-rounders every other year. And if the team wanted to acquire its next star player via trade, the Lakers wouldn't have any future firsts available until 2031. That's only a worthwhile sacrifice if, in return, the franchise can take a clear, immediate step forward.

Acquiring Beverley should help the Lakers. He can play behind Westbrook or replace him in the starting group after a trade. Somewhere in that mess of iffy options is a solution that could lead to a Westbrook deal. In the absence, the Lakers and new head coach Darvin Ham will do their best to prove that last year's debacle can be solved in the locker room and on the court.

Pardon me for ruining your breakfast cereal, Steve, but I saw this on Rachel NIchols' page and had to think about the coming years with LeBron still very much in the thick of it, unfortunately.

Two more years of him in Lakers purple and gold as he likely will beat Kareem's scoring record this year. One more thing to add to his dynasty.

Worst move Lakers ever made resulting in total destruction of the team and draft choices for years to come. Heaven forbid the Lakers retire LeBron's number (well they have to if he is number 6). Send him back to Cleveland to retire there. Cleveland doesn't want him as they have a reasonably good team

I thought this was a terrific read........

NBA Power Rankings: Where the Nets, Lakers and all 30 teams stand ahead of the 2022-23 season

Lakers 18th (way too flattering as I don't see them making the playoffs) and the Celtics as number 2 (well deserved after last year)

Now that Kyrie and KD are finished with their little antics the sportscasters are suddenly big on Ben Simmons. An interesting read if Simmons can rise to the occasion.

The 6-foot-11 former All-Star guard is expected to be ready for training camp with the Nets this season.

I read analysts saying that Ben should play center. Well, maybe like D'Andre Jordan, no need to shoot, makes some sense.
