My Toshiba Satellite is going on 8 years old and it has truly served me well. Never, during all of that time, have I experienced any issues of any type. The only problem with it was that like us, we get old and get a little slower. The Toshiba is still running faithfully, but it doesn't really want to.
When MS introduced their Surface Pro and Surface RT I knew I wanted to have a look at them both, and at first I sold myself on the idea of getting the Pro. After giving it some thought, I decided that I really don't need a full-fledged laptop like a Surface Pro any longer, since I really don't use productivity apps much any longer. My needs are simple. I only want to access the web, email and have the portability to take it with me in a light and small package. The RT fits that bill.
So when Staples announced a Black Friday deal for the Surface RT, that included the touch cover keyboard and a copy of MS Office for $250, I jumped on it. For an extra $20 I upgraded to the type cover keyboard with its more traditional tactile feel. It's a really nice package and I'm pleased with it. Some will argue that the Windows App store looks anemic as compared to Apple and Google's offerings, but that don't bother me much either.
So far I'm quite impressed with the battery life, although I haven't really spent much time watching videos or listening to music. The screen image is really nice as well, despite the fact it pales in comparison to a Retina display. If I were a photographer or watched a lot of movies then it probably wouldn't be a smart choice. For basic web browsing, email and perhaps the odd document, the Surface RT is a really nice choice for an inexpensive 10.1" tablet.
