my window 'inserts' were built in 2011 by the contractor that originally did my room build. it was a part of removing my (15' x 10') side and front wall bass traps, and replacing them with a dual layer of Quietrock THX545.......
QuietRock 545 is a multi-layer, specialty panel engineered to provide maximum sound control across a broad range of frequencies. QuietRock 545 is ideal for…

........and 3/4" finish grade maple ply. for the inserts we went one step farther and added another third layer of 3/4" finish grade play.
Quietrock 545 is about as much of a boundary for such a small thickness as you can get. it has a 1/4" layer of aluminum......and eats up saw blades quickly. your contractor will hate you. your ears will thank you.
so 3/4" ply <-> Quietrock545 <-> 3/4" ply. encased inside a frame of 5/8" maple ply sides. it takes two strong people to lift these mothers into place. but......they are stout enough to complete the room boundary for a solid front wall. overkill is......just......right.
assuming you have the capable people on hand to pull them out or put them in it only takes 5-10 minutes to do either one. my contractor rigged a screw in system to lock them tight, but it's easy to either attach or remove those pins.
I should have known with you it wouldn't be a simple as a piece of wood and some dry wall screws, LOL.
Here is my route as sound was not my goal as much as light blocking for my theater.
In the end however my solution had multiple benefits for the positive.
I ended up using two layers of 2 inch thick Styrofoam insulation board with foil backing as I wanted the outside to be white like the blinds that are in there as to not piss off the neighbors and the inside to be white also.
I cut the first layer of foam slightly oversized and pushed it in place, foil facing in, caulked and painted the foil with 4 coats of black paint. 100% light blockage at this point, there is my over kill lol. I then cut the second layer and gave 3 coats of black paint on the foil side, more over kill and pushed in foil side to the street.
As these are 6 inch window ledges, I had room to hang the wide slat blinds back up. Its night 24/7.
Several other benefits, the room sounds better, the room is warmer, its 20 degrees outside, 40 degrees during the day at the moment and reduced the sound being projected towards the neighbors house by 90%.
So while not 90lb two man inserts, the goal was achieved with other benefits that I did not consider as I was so focused on light blocking.
I hung my 150 in screen, installed the new projector as well as two new SVS subs and now I am on the rattle chase.
Everyone loves it so far even though still in preliminary set up and cosmetic applications right now.
Fresh homemade popcorn for everyone!
