Another term for this is dynamic compression. I've even heard some blu-rays that sound like they suffer from this. On another A/V forum, I've read several times where posters will review a blu-ray and then complain that the soundtrack wasn't loud enough. In other words, the complaint is that the reviewer had to turn up the volume and this was proof to him that the producer of the blu-ray had cheated him of something. This is an unfortunate misunderstanding. It's the really loud soundtracks that should draw suspicion, the ones where you find you have to turn the volume down to match your usual comfortable volume.
