The Sprint was part of our Safeguard ABM System, the deployment of which was limited by the SALT talks between the US and the USRR in the early 70s. The Spartan ABM was designed to intercept enemy ballistic missiles above the earth's atmosphere with the much faster Sprint designed to destroy missiles that eluded the Spartan first line of defense. Only one Safeguard site was fully deployed and operational (in North Dakota) before being decommissioned in 1976.
