and Windows machines as well....

I spend probably at least a few hours each week troubleshooting problems with computers.

Case in point.... I have some software that will only run on Leopard/Snow Leopard. ( I didn't know this until after exhaustive research ). I also have a G5 PPC and Tiger is as far as you can upgrade. I went out and bought a new MAC mini.... Works perfectly, except it came with Mountain Lion. Tried to downgrade to Snow Leopard.... nope... Tried to install Snow Leopard on another partition.... nope.... won't let me do it. I ripped out the hard drive on the Mini and started with a new SSD.... Still won't let me install Snow Leopard... WTF???? I've wasted probably 3 days total with this crap.

Got a Win 7 machine that I built that ran perfectly for a year and now I get BSOD after a Java update. Can't uninstall, even in Safe mode. Tried Recovery back to known good config and it won't let me do it..... F*CK!!!!

Thanks for letting me blow off steam!

Sorry for all the problems Bruce. MACs don't take kindly to downgrading. Not all the device drivers etc. are in the older version.

I had a Windows laptop that would BSOD on a specific update. I got lucky with that one, but it still took over a day to track down the problem

A possible fix for the Win7 machine is to enter regedit, and pick out all instances of java. If you can't get into regedit, download Regseeker version 1.55. It is freeware, but be sure to get it from its maker, Hoverdesk. It will let you access regedit, and will run from the zip file without being installed. That means you can download it with another machine, and put it on a zip drive, assuming safe mode will allow you to open an external drive.

After java is gone, you can use System Restore from a point before the upgrade to return the machine to a time before the java upgrade. Now that I think about it, have you tried System Restore to get the machine going without the error?

I try System Restore to a point before the upgrade and it hangs up. I try uninstalling Java in Safe Mode and it tells me it can't find Windows Installer.

Other than what you suggested is for me to do a clean install. I try to do a Windows Fix using the Recovery disc and it locks up.

Well, I believe you can delete enough of it in regedit to get the machine running well enough to put it back to normal without a clean install. Short of a clean install, if that fails, is a simple overwrite. That way, you won't lose anything. However, you'll have to do a bunch of Win7 upgrades after an overwrite, so I would save the option as a last resort.

Sadly Bruce I also have to use some Java applications and it really freaks me out at times, because they really do not implement it correctly within Microsoft architecture (not Microsoft fault this time).
Java is a right pain in the &%^, unfortunate some developers use it.

Tried to install Snow Leopard on another partition.

Partitioning worked for me when I wanted to install an older OS. It was awhile ago, but I used a program called Drivegenius to make the partitions. IIRC, it allows more flexibility before and after partitioning than what's built into the Mac for partitions. . After the install, I eliminated the partition with the newer OS so the machine was entirely the old OS

I feel your pain Bruce, in my case I have not been able yet to download the neccesary drivers to have my Mytek recognize DSD files!..called an "expert" to fix the problem and, after half a day of un-succesful tries, he took homework back.

Bob - your new avatar looks like a popular Mexican craft from Oaxaca state, were you aware?

Bruce,

It's a well known fact that Macs only run the version of the OS that was current at the time of their launch.
So, if the mini you bought was launched when Lion was current, it'll only run Lion. And a specific version of that too, say, 10.7.3.
If you must run an old version of the OS, you should just buy used or refurbished. Apple sells refurbished gear.

Thanks Alexandre...... sure wish someone told me this months ago!

I've been searching Craigslist and think I found a MacBook that runs Snow Leopard. This is a PITA for sure...

I almost pray every time I boot up my Sonoma system. It can only run on Win XP Pro. I even tried the XP clone inside Win 7 and it doesn't work. I had the forthought to buy 2 extra copies of Win XP just in case!

Yep Flez, got it in San Jose De Cabo, really nicely made. Spoke to me. A head to toe shot of the piece gives full effect but doesn't work as a small avatar.

He's my occasional tequila drinking buddy :)

Lion, which came out after Snow Leopard, was released in July 2011. That's almost 2 years. You'd think your software developer would've had time to make his software compatible with a 2-year old OS... Put some pressure there, as it's kinda absurd.

The software is actually from Apple......wtf?????
It allows you to use the codec when you submit files for "Mastered for iTunes" or MFiT
