DCS Vivaldi

As you I go on buying CDs and SACDs and I listen mostly to physical media when staying away of the WBF vapors ...

The bad news is that physical media sounds better on the Vivaldi when using its transport than ripping the CD. When I got the Vivaldi's I was considering keeping the Metronome - it looks and sound great - but I had no chance, the Vivaldi transport was really significantly better!

I wouldn't be to sure about that...the Updampler as a roon end point via network is very comparable

"WBF vapors", that's pretty funny.

My brother is a hardly an audiophile, but he loves his bootleg classic rock recordings of European concerts from the 70's. He listens to these obscure CDs in his car and small system at home, no doubt impressed by Richie Blackmore's endlessly variable guitar solos. This past weekend he showed me a CD of Deep Purple's Fireball. He bought it because inside the jewell case was a small booklet which discussed the making of the album; fascinating, but hard to read the tiny print. When he came over to visit today, the first thing he wanted to see was my LP of Machine Head. He said he couldn't wait to flip through the gatefold and hold the album cover and check out the photos. I told him to be careful because it was an original UK first pressing, and fairly rare. Physical media is pretty cool, whether or not it actually sounds better.

Two of my local audio friends use transport + DAC while a third rips and downloads his digital. I haven't done a direct comparison of the differences, but I read that quite a few prefer the sound of digital via physical media.

I'm changing opinions here to. I stated a few times the transport beat the upsampler/nas (redbook cd vs something like a 24/96 download) over the last year or two...even though the upsampler was pretty cool. With the latest upsampler update, I'm not so sure either, a well recorded hi rez file is hard to beat. It's all good however...beauty of dCS is it allows you to enjoy the music...regardless of source. I still LOVE my vinyl...it's just getting less and less time now...

Well I will never know how much better the Vivaldi Transport is to ripped media and I'm happy being ignorant. I love Roon and the wonderful convenience of a music server.

Hi.
Which ethernet cables are you using to stream?

I'm pretty fond of the Transparent Ethernet cables. Not pricey (consider cable pricing) ~$250 per meter. They use diff sheilding than your AQ cables. So I expect you'd get a diff outcome...

PS, just email Transparent or your local dealer, I'm guessing it's pretty easy to get a demo to try...

What brand of router are you using? A new router will be my next move, as it is inexpensive and easy to locate. The system improved when I inserted a second cheap router just for the NAS and the Upsampler.

Are you using the Transparent Ethernet just for the Vivaldi or also for the NAS and PC?

I'm using Apple Airport Extremes. But curious what others are using. Transparent ethernet from router to Vivaldi upsampler and NAS to router...

So you hear differences between ethernet cables? Guess I shouldn't be too surprised....

For my rack, I use a dedicated Dell 2808 commercial grade 1GB 8-port switch. This is connected via CAT 5e cable back to my main SonicWall firewall/router that connects to FIOS and the rest of my network. I have a Blackbox ethernet isolator between the Dell switch and my router. Everything except the NAS is plugged into this Dell switch including SonicTransporter running RoonServer, Win12 Server running JRiver and room correction, Upsampler, and a Mac Mini I use for ripping LPs. I use AQ Diamond's to the Upsampler and my Win12 Server in the rack but I just use a standard CAT 6 cable for the NAS, which is located in another room, and everything else. I'm currently burning in a WireWorld ethernet cable which sounds pretty close to the AQ Diamonds so far and at a much lower price. I tested the Diamonds against several other AQ models and some others but not Transparent.

As far as I see you have the audio network around the Dell switch, isolated with the Blackbox from the main home network. Can I ask why is the NAS is connected outside the audio network? Seems strange, considering that the NAS supplies the data for your DAC.

haha...yes. Just happy these aren't so much $$

As i've said in the past, u need to get fiber on any runs to your audio pieces.....

I'm using fiber, but you still need to convert it to CAT coming out of the fiber converter/into the Upsampler.

Yes
I haven't experimented with that short CAT piece...yet LOL

I've tried the NAS in the rack and in another room. I heard no difference in SQ, so I kept it in the other room to get rid of the fan noise and eliminate any chance of HD vibration or other noise from the NAS being transmitted to the rack or other components.

Vivaldi clock arrived and integrated to Vivaldi setup via Transparent xl clock cables. First impressions: an improvement which is not subtle. Precision, timing, liquidity all improved. Upper frequencies are crystal clear while musical involvement is better, presentation is more relaxed. I was a bit reluctant to add clock but it seems guys at DCS know what they are talking about.

Congratulations! Very happy for you !

Great move. A few days ago I found myself checking the Soundlab polarizations, amplifiers, tube bias and power cables, as I was finding that something was lacking in the system. Then I found that by mistake I had wrongly configured the clock settings of the DAC when playing with the menus...

Now I keep the display always on when playing!
