These were used only for room correction. They subtracted bass; they did not augment it.
Can we have more details on this aspect? Did you use an equalizer to isolate peaks for cancellation?

Poor setup with too much forward projection, Typical loudmouth horn with poor scaling , the Clarysis was more textured and scaled better ..Thanks. Rimsky Korsakov’s dance played on an Oppo here, one woofer Altec
IMO , poor amplification vs the show SS and room /phase issues at home. The source components at home or at the show are more than capable of pulling off good sound..Ron, what do you think accounts for what people think was a better sound at the show? Most people discount show conditions as having bad rooms and bad power. You’re saying it had nothing to do with the vinyl source. You say it’s theoretically possible the amplifiers make the difference or having the Pendragon panels in the room, or perhaps the room dimensions.
I’m still curious about that turntable used at the show. Did you borrow that from a friend and who did the set up?
Sounds more like he was using them to null, so gain and phase adjustments on the subwoofer…Can we have more details on this aspect? Did you use an equalizer to isolate peaks for cancellation?
My understanding of the Von Schweikert subs is that there is not an equalizer or DSP built in so, while attacking the peaks may be the objective, they will pull up the nulls as well. Basically a smoother overall low frequency response will be the result. I believe that this is a big part of why Von Schweikert gets consistent sound at audio shows. They get smooth bass response for all listening positions because they have multiple sources of low frequency information in the room. Ron’s room definitely benefited from that as well (yes, I did visit Ron’s room multiple times). My only point here is that it is one of the potential factors that may have caused Ron’s room at T.H.E. Show to sound better than his home room.Sounds more like he was using them to null, so gain and phase adjustments on the subwoofer…

Ron it was a question I wanted to ask who set this uptheoretically possible
I alone set-up the speakers in both situations. At T.H.E. Show nobody touched the speakers but me.

I was actually describing Bonzo ….!!!Perhaps I do not understand what you mean by "forward projection". I hear superior energy and a very alive sounding system with excellent tone and tonal shadings. Very good balance and weight. Also clarity on those triangles and instrumental timbres. This is a good presentation. Effortless and dynamic. And yes, it is an Oppo digital source. The music comes through and does not sound constricted.
The subwoofers were not used to augment.Probably as panels lack very low frequencies they will augment/add the very low non existing frequencies and decrease just the low frequency content that is in opposite phase. I have played with subs with SoundLab's and it had such effect. Just guessing, we would have to know about the exact crossover settings to understand it better.

Huh? (Color me confused then)The subwoofers were not used to augment.
I am delighted that you liked the system!Ron, I was only able to attend on Sunday but really enjoyed your speakers and the system. I was fascinated by the Von Schweikert "attenuators" that you had configured in your room, but I think they were even more impressive in VS' own room which was very long, creating a better opportunity to show off the effect.
It was quite entertaining seeing the tweeters "breath" on the louder passages, and I love the retro look of the speakers you displayed. I'm a huge fan of "panel" speakers - both Magnepan and electrostatics - and very much enjoyed the results in your room.
I've been hosting for the last three days my friend Alan Kafton, and now I can turn to reflecting on the very successful partnership among my Audio Café and Gary Leeds' Hear This and Damon Von Schweikert's Von Schweikert Audio at T.H.E. Show Costa Mesa 2025.
All three of us were very happy with the sound we were achieving at T.H.E. Show. While I have used extensively one WestminsterLab REI amplifier per speaker to demonstrate for prospective clients at Audio Café my Clarisys Studio loudspeakers, Gary went all out and contributed two pairs of REIs per channel. So a bridged pair of REIs drove each loudspeaker full range.
The bridged REIs -- along with the WestminsterLab Quest preamplifier -- upped the resolution and detail and dynamics, and lowered the noise floor, significantly. The lowest bass to to the midrange was fully fleshed out and very natural.
Damon contributed two Von Schweikert Audio Foundation 15 subwoofers. He didn't use these big bad boys to augment the bass, but, rather, in room correction mode to smooth out any room mode and low frequency anomaly. Damon's talent and skill smoothed out the lowest frequencies and allowed the extension and resolved texture of the Clarisys woofer ribbons to be revealed. Von Schweikert Audio also contributed the Technics tape machine.
Damon's team did an incredible job lugging and setting up all of the equipment, including the gorgeous and incredibly heavy Folgenhaus Audio stand.
Vassil Strachnikov, the North American distributor of Taiko Audio, was able to get us a Taiko Olympus server with the built-in DAC. I have been hearing for way over a year that the built-in DAC is a giant killer, and can eliminate extra boxes with it's all-in-one solution. All I know is that our digital playback sounded great!
Peter Noerbaek, the proprietor of PBN Audio, very graciously contributed to our system an extremely rare (only approximately 120 ever made) Denon DP-100M turntable with a Groovemaster tonearm and an Acoustic Signature MCX-3.
Last but definitely not least the entire system was wired with MasterBuilt Ultra cables. The MasterBuilt cables provided the tonal density and naturalness for which they are well-known worldwide.
I was very happy with the sound we were getting from this collection of outstanding components! Thanks very much to Gary, Damon, Peter and Vassil for making our exhibit in Balboa II a big success!
