Hello,

While I’ve posted a few times on WBF, I’m primarily a lurker and have come to appreciate the civility of this forum—so rare these days.

It was 30 years ago this month that I opened the first Hi Notes, located in Perry, GA, near Macon. It was a proper brick-and-mortar store with three dedicated listening rooms. We had a great time, but I eventually closed the shop to become president of Spectron, the pioneer in Class D amplification. From there, I teamed up with Ron Genereaux (SigTech) and Burke Mathis (Curtis Mathis, Pacific Stereo, Acoustic Research) to bring the world’s first USB DAC to market under the trade name Stereo-Link.

In 2004, I returned to my first love—classical music—and became Artistic and General Director of two opera companies: Long Leaf Opera in Raleigh-Durham and later the Center for Contemporary Opera in NYC, from which I retired in 2018. After co-authoring a book on opera, I got bored (as one does), and my wife suggested I open another Hi Notes—which I did in 2021. This edition is located in a second home on Lake Hyco, near Durham, NC.

I’ve always been a bit of an oddball. Back in high school in the late ’60s, while my friends dreamt of Corvettes or SS 396s, I wanted a Citroën DS. That same thinking continues to shape my approach to audio. My current lineup includes products from Bergmann, Cinnamon, Grandinote, Gradient, Moonriver, Thöress, and Wolf von Langa—to name just a few. Shortly, I expect the first products from CanEVER to arrive as well.

We're not exactly on the beaten path, so if you travel more than 150 miles, I’ll gladly cover your hotel—whether you buy anything or not. Please let me know if I may be of help. Thank you.

Kind regards,
Jim Schaeffer
