A truly exemplary system

Peter, I think my system thread has maybe gone on too long, too much navel gazing, too many uses of the word "epiphany", lol.
I would love to hear what fellow travellers are up to, but the industry discourse is where WBF is at.
Obviously, that is where the money is as well.
Of course, we've also lost unique voices like Tang and Audiophile Bill, and the odd spiky industry figure as well who is a square peg in the round hole of today's WBF (I think you know him quite well, Peter?).

Very true and too funny. I do really miss Audiophile Bill and Tang. And there are some others. Jeffrey 1225 has an interesting system and room, but does not participate much anymore. The forum has a big reach and I know there are some people with interesting ideas and systems who used to read, but not participate. I don’t know if they’re still doing so.

Regarding long system threads and epiphanies, I have one of those. At some point what needs to be shared has been shared. And then we move on just like that square peg has done.

I too miss Audiophile Bill & Tang.
Audiophile Bill was very generous with his time & knowledge - sharing his experiences & answering my questions - some via the website & others via DM.
It was he that tweaked my interest in horn speakers & he also came across as an absolute gentleman.
It was a sad day when he had enough of being harangued by control freaks & quietly withdrew...

Mark, Thanks for the great write up.
You had a very interesting comment that strikes a nerve with me. I have been moving my system a little more towards horns. But I have also said, Horns every day may become a little too much. I have a lot more horn in mine at the moment. And its not blended correctly yet. It stand out and gets in the way. At times its overly analytical. I have to use a SS amp to tame it all down till I get it balanced out. At times I still wonder about a box speaker.

I don’t wonder. I have one.

For me, it’s not so much about typology. It’s about the end, result and listening experience. This thread is about a system that impressed Marc. Or maybe more precisely, it’s not about the system, but about the way, the music was presented in the room.

Your system is still at work in progress from all of your reports. It’s natural for you to keep questioning.

Yes, But I am talking topology. Because I wonder if some topology may be easier than others to master.

I think it’s more than that. It is not possible to think of any other speaker in such a small room apart from AN-E, tannoy, or corner horns, and audionec Evo 2, definitely not big cones or horns, and he had Goebbel Divin there before. The cones are in the corner. The room iirc is just 14x13 or so in the main area with the front wall additionally curving into the bay window, this curve can be used for gear not speakers, but the rack hasn’t been placed there and the empty space helps the music.

Yet with Stirling’s set up they pulled it off and that room sings However having heard two other Stirling rooms, one with CH and Rockport Lyra was just like the Caesar’s description of CH and other CH I have heard, so clearly this room with CH and Stenheim did something right and special. Interestingly the room with the Rockport has the rack in between, while this room has rack at the side, and with the same electronics, the depth and flow of the orchestral stage is much higher here. Another room with the Ultime 2 also has the rack in between and lacks that. I know there have been many discussions of how much impact can taking the rack out of the middle make, but surveying these three rooms at least for me is sufficiently strong case to keep the rack out of the middle (three rooms of which two are Stenheim Ultime 2, two are CH, all three set up by Stirling).

Your unheard expectations are ones I'd also share with you given the list. Except Steinheim, those are quite musical speakers. Very cool to hear of a system creating something so much more than the parts!

I find it hard to believe that moving the rack to the side would mainly be the reason for this amazing sound.

I don’t see myself writing that? It is an additional point, an important one. Also the scheherezingers

Morning Marc
I’ve heard from a number of sources I trust that placing an equipment rack between speakers is generally not a good idea as it can mess with soundstage and imaging. Of course practical (or maybe even aesthetic) considerations will often dictate placement approach. I have not done a comparison myself.
Thanks for the lovely write up by the way
Cheers
Steve

I believe they're Stein Music units, not Scherzingers. The owner swears by these over more obtrusive (or is that intrusive? Lol) room treatments.
He also comments on rock solid room construction, non suspended floor, the kind we *used* to build in the UK.
I'm absolutely sure all this majorly helps, critically with the low end control and solidity that is a hallmark of his sound.
This is also the second time I've heard the Monaco (first being a 2.0 over a decade ago), and I was immediately reminded why I loved it then and love it now.

Just catching Myles Astor video clips on the new Stellavox sounding *great* in his *small* room.
And a fellow with large Carfrae Big Horns/BD7s sounding *great* in his *small* room. And Tom/Montesquieu sounding *great* in his *small* room. And Barry/Blue58 sounding *great* in his *small* room.
I think there may be a pattern here, but I just can't quite see it...

Maybe you moved in the wrong direction? You should have looked for an apartment in Mayfair

Ah, where I have the perfect room size for audio, but no money for a system...or bills, food, LPs etc.
