6 db mystery ....

A few weeks ago, I noticed that the volume of my late night listening session (in 2 channel) had gone up from setting 10 to about 25 on my preamp (this represents 7.5db gain difference). I have an integrated MCH system, and sure enough my five channel calibration disc, indicated the volume level of my mains were now 6 db below center and surround. When I initially calibrates they were at the same level. I had mysteriously lost 6 db of gain on my mains.

Since my MCH calibration disc plays in a modded Oppo, and my 2 channel is different digital source (music server with USB), the digital source cannot be the cause. I also rule out my poweramps, which are monoblocks. Unlikely they both take a 6 db hit at the same time.

This leaves my DAC (MSB Signature IV) and my preamp (Arc Ref 5SE) as the only two components that could be the root cause. Any idea what to look for, and what could have caused this 6Db drop? Only thing I changed recently are powercords, but losing 6db gain through PC switch seems too much of a stretch.

Any changes to output taps for impedance? (if your system has such, I didn't see a full description)

Any chance that the volume setting on your server has been changed?

What happens if you put your old PCs back in? 6db is a ton, so i'd be surprised if they made that much difference...but in science, sometimes you have to go back to the last place where you knew exactly where you stood.

This will be lot of work. Cables are buried and this operation will take a few hours...

Could some setting have reverted to default or just changed during the power cord swap (due to removing power)? Also possible something just glitched, or something went bad.

My DAC was already set to - 9db. This setting was still active. I fixed the problem by setting it to - 3 db. I'm just curious what could have "gone bad". May be something in the preamp????

sorry...I hate when this kind of stuff happens.

Do you need to get rid of some earwax? :) It is well known that removing earwax and switching from unbalanced to balanced increases volume by exactly 6db.

Mystery solved. There is indeed a balanced / single ended select button on the preamp that I must have accidentally hit. If you are hooked up balanced single ended will still generate sound, but at 6 db lower volume.
