Doctor's Orders-Part Two-The New Listening Room Of Steve Williams

Please explain this to Ron. He argued multiple times and even started a thread saying
Bigger speakers are required for bigger stage,....

Also this: Jim Smith suggested, and I later confirmed with my own experiments, that moving speakers closer toward each other does not necessarily result in a narrower soundstage. In fact, I learned that it can result in a greater variety of soundstage presentations more dependent on the actual recording. In other words, the system presentation may become more transparent and revealing of the information on the recording.

Each of us decides for himself the balance between transparency to recording and "as we like it".

Jeff as I write this I am now in FortLauderdale where my wife and I finally got to meet out newest grand son and we had the listening session arranged for at least 4-5 months, Yesterday was supposed to be my visit to your house other your new room. I had to cancel that at the last minute with the new of the safe arrival of our newest grandson. We are here until Thursday but once I return home I will be in touch for a visit which I look fondly for

Thanks again for a great day. It was good to see you and your new "do". I felt I wanted to run my fingers all down it ..It suits you ....:)
Congrats for your new member of the family Steve!

There are some days that are filled with fun and making new friends based on the hobby we all love

Today, all the way from Taiwan I had the pleasure of hosting the king and meister of Lampitube rolling, the one and only sampajanna, What a delightfully wonderful person. We spent an hour talking about our life paths and all I can say is that sampajanna has such a life story to tell. His is a success story from start to finish and reinforces to me that anyone with a love of something and a passion to share can achieve their life's dream.

Sampajanna has chronicled his path of tube rolling using Lampi DAC's here on WBF . He has an Aphrodite on order and knows that I have commented that the Aphrodite has relieved me of my itch for any further tube rolling. It was an early morning visit as he has a busy schedule for the next few weeks related to his highly successful business which is now a global entity and is so successful that he has found a way to retire at the very young age of 50

He has a great ear for music and is very eclectic in his tastes. I know he was most interested in the Aphrodite so we spent the entire morning streaming using the stock tubes provided by Lukasz . Like me he is not a fan of rap or country/western so it was easy to find a plethora of files to stream to his delight. He is a vinylphile primarily but we never got to the analog side of my system as he was totally into streaming today

The visit was all too short as he had an afternoon lecture to give this afternoon in Ojai and after about 3 hours we had to say goodbye. My sense however is that our paths willl cross again because of similar life interests and loves

He was wonderful to engage but without divulging his life path I can say that he followed his life's ambition and built a highly successful company in Taiwan over the past 26 years which now has global representation. He brought along a prized product of that company and all I can say is that it was the best I have ever sampled . It brought a smile to his face

Kudos and thank you for taking time from your busy schedule to spend a few hours with me and my wife. It is moments like these that make this hobby so much fun. I know our paths will cross again. He was just too much fun to become a memory

This was one of the highlights of my trip. Steve is a most gracious and wonderful host. He and his wife welcomed my into their home and we hit it off right away. I had a marvelous time. And what a system! I learned a lot about hifi, music and the potential of home stereo. Steve has really put together a glorious listening room that you could lose yourself in for weeks. It is balanced, engaging and highly satisfying with any type of music you throw at it.

I have heard the Zellatons in a few settings now and find them to have a real magic in the upper bass and lower mid in particular, though they, of course, do not slouch elsewhere as well. But there is a sweet clarity in that range especially that is very pleasing. And I have not heard this in any other speaker so far.

I left with plenty of ideas about how to improve my system and, of course, as with any meeting between audiophiles, several new tracks to add to my playlist of test tracks.

Great to make a new friend and share this love for all things Lampizator, Hifi and music!

Today was another good day with a visit from member Doug Schneider a retired pathologist from the SF Bay Area along with a class mate, a retired pulmonologist from Long Beach and we spent the day listening to songs played through Aphrodite as well as spinning some vinyl. We all agreed that streaming via Aphrodite was something very special but vinyl still reigned supreme. Nice to see Doug again as he bought my Horizon last year and is deeply invested in some serious tube rolling. Thank you both for a wonderful day.

Sounds like a fun day, Steve. How would you describe the fundamental difference you hear from your vinyl and digital front ends? And do you think you are visitors agree?

we all agreed Peter. Digital has reached a new level with the Olympus/Io _Aphrodite combination but as good as streaming is, it just hasnt reached the magic of what vinyl can deliver. I sense however that the gap is closing but whether the line will ever be crossed remains an unknown. I would never say never. All in all it was a great day

Steve’s vinyl is sounding great with the proven combination of VDH > SME 3012R > TechDas > Lamm chain.

It’s interesting that you highlighted the “sweet clarity” of Steve’s ZELLATON’s, as it’s a very unique balance between transparency and beauty, often irreconcilable ideals in speaker design, imho. When I installed his speakers , I also tuned Steve’s Schnerzinger devices in order to maximize this exact quality you mentioned, hence my joy that you acknowledged it. Wish I could have joined in order to experience the Lampi magic as well.

Yes, I feel like my Martens do this in the upper end (sweetness and clarity in balance), but these speakers do it in ranges that no other speaker I have heard can do, especially the upper bass and lower midrange. I have heard the Zellatons in three settings with very different electronics and all 3 had this. It is very addictive.

This is my long overdue first post to WBF, although I’ve been eagerly mining the collective wisdom here for some time, ever since I relapsed into my audio derangement syndrome. So fun!

Last Friday, I had the high privilege of spending unhurried time with Steve Williams listening to the latest iteration of his magnificent sound system. The new - to me - elements in his system are the Lampizator Aphrodite, the Zelleton speakers, and the Schnertzinger voodoo. When I try to describe subjective aspects of the sound, I can’t make reference to the wide range of high-end audiophile gear that many of you have experienced. Instead I can only refer to my semi-professional experience with live music, especially with piano, organ, and voice.

It was immediately apparent to me that the Zelletons are a big step up from Steve’s former Wilsons. I am somewhat sensitive to crossover irregularities, some of which I heard in the Wilsons, especially from bass to midrange. This was gone with the Zelletons. The sound was beautifully coherent throughout the frequency range. The speakers were fast, transparent, and highly resolving without being overly analytical. The sound of drumsticks hitting the snare drums, even softly, and the soft sound of brushes on cymbals was clear, detailed, and realistic. Male and female voices projected themselves from the sound stage into the room convincingly and, when present, with great beauty. The sound stage was convincing, which is a completely different experience than with my open baffle speakers. Instruments were well located on the stage. Bass was prodigious, as has been commented on before. It was easy to “listen into” the music, something I’ve begun to call “active listening”, to pick out the various elements comprising the sound but without having to dissect the elements or take the sound apart mentally. The speakers are very wholistic. I’m becoming a convert to wide-band midrange drivers.

It was also clear to me that the Aphrodite, in combination with the Taiko Olympus/IO, produced the most musically convincing digital sound I have ever heard. I’m afraid I succumbed to my obsession for musical realism, whatever that is, by relieving Steve of much of his carefully curated tube collection. Please! Does anyone know any treatment for this out-of-control audiophilia?

There was yet another revealing moment in this session with the good doctor. One track of Dean Martin on 160 gm vinyl stole the show, at least for this guy who grew up on live music. Gone was the slight “fizziness” (for lack of a better word) that I still hear with digital reproduction of complex upper frequency harmonics. Dean was just more there, more embodied, more emotionally present.

I brought an old high school, college, and med school buddy of mine along to listen to Steve’s system. I’m not sure I did him a favor. In the beginning he kept saying that this is all just a “black box” to him, just a “black box.” But when we left he was talking about raiding is retirement funds to get something other than his in-ceiling speakers.

Steve, thank you, thank you for a very special day of learning, sonic pleasure, and audio friendship, which is the best part of this passion. And special thanks to Kathy for so graciously opening your home to me and to all of us audio pilgrims on this path to I don’t know where. :)

Doug
