A pertinent question but it seems no one has asked as yet so with the new horizon, who is sending back their Pacific's? Or are you keeping the pac as well?

If I had the room I would have kept mine. The trade up offer however is just too good however to pass up. I’m done tube rolling and have sourced sufficient backup sets of everything and then some. As Lukasz advised pick what you like and stick with it.

Good to hear Steve, indeed a very good trade in, I too am quite tempted. Curious though why would you have kept the pac if you had the space? Was it the different approach with dht as the final stage that captivates you or is the sound enjoyable but just in a different way to the horizon that gives a different flavour to the music?

I thought the PAC was and still is a fabulous DAC with a totally different presentation than the Horizon. Having made that bold statement, the chance of my ever playing it again would be slim to none. Once you hear the Horizon, you cannot unhear it. It is without question "the dac for me" that has brought me so close to the music that I have been rediscovering all of my old digital files and hearing things that seemed all so new to me. The Pacific indeed is a different flavor. The Horizon OTOH is so good that it doesn't't seem to matter which tubes one uses. You find a tube set that appeals to your ears and if you like it, my recommendation is to always have a backup set of your tubes because the tube you might need years from now just might not exist or is so expensive that a purchase becomes impossible. The world is a crazy place now which has made tube availability impossible and prices skyrocketing. Case in point , I bought a quad matched set of the new TungSol KT 170 for $388. I was going to sell the set as I was really liking the KR KT88 that I was using until Lukasz and Rau convinced me I should try them again,. Reluctantly I did and boy, what an epiphany they caused after burn in. I loved these tubes and sought to buy a backup set some 6 weeks after I purchased the initial quad set. Previously there was a plethora of this tube everywhere for the price mentioned. Now 6 weeks later the tube vanished from every USA dealer except the company from which I bought the original quad set and the price now is $2250 . You can find them in SE Asia but it becomes a crap shoot as to authenticity, as well as can they deliver. We found a supply in Ukraine but obviously shipping was impossible. My recommendation was and still is......if you are in the queue for an Horizon search out and buy your tubes now and also get a back up set. It will be a long time, if ever at all, that the pice and availability of tubes will return to what we knew 2-3 months ago. It will get worse before it gets better

I listened 2 hrs last night , I will listen tonight again . I can say this much they best the KT88 and I canceled my backup pair of KT-170's .The 807 Quad and Adapters can be found dirt cheap and there are millions out there

FWIW Francois sent me all the spec sheets in the 5687. Unfortunately they were all in French. What I did see that was a bit of a concern is that tube life is said to be 1000 hours. I hope Lukasz is right when he says the tubes will last 10 years. I do have 3 matched sets. Fingers crossed

Maybe then that's not good . The Bendix 6900 is more durable and is 5000 hrs

so you need 3 pr of 5687 per yr ouch

I bought out Francois stash of open plate Thomson CSF 5687 for that reason
