Miles Davis suffered a lot from police harassment and was even brutally beaten once by a cop in New York. Amazing he endured that and was still one of the greatest composers and musicians of the 20th century.
An African American's life in that time period was full of beatings, harassments and the occasional murder by the police. Many (including Miles) went to Europe to record, perform and live. Some of my favorite jazz albums are recorded in Europe, no surprise the music sounds more free.

According to Dexter Gordon's biography that's what drove him for Europe for over a decade. However, his drug addictions caused him some issues there as well.

This is my favorite jazz LP so I ordered a copy. Do I need it? No, but I'm sure I will enjoy owning it. I have an original pressing as well as various reissues and a test pressing. One more copy won't hurt. :)

I have every Gordon album, one if my favorites. The last time I visited Paris I dragged the family to Montmartre to pay homage.

My big question is do I need this? I have the Cisco reissue that is referenced in the article. What is gained from the UHQR?

Yes, he suffered plenty of abuse from the police in Philly too, as by the way, did Charlie Parker.

I think you mean the Classic reissue? This new release uses the small metalwork used by Classic. The UHQR vinyl formulation is supposed to be quieter.

What is this “metalwork”... are you implying they’re not cutting new metal mothers? Seems like to create the flat profile of a UHQR you have to start with new laquers, etc? Am I ignorant of something?

According to Fremer:

This edition is the first since Classic Records' 2002 reissue to use the metal parts created using Bernie Grundman's mastering in which he cut lacquers directly from the 3 track master tapes. Grundman also corrected the quarter tone sharp reproduction of "So What", "Freddie The Freeloader" and "Blue in Green" created by the original 3 track recorder running slow during the first recording session. Grundman said at the time that the recording was ideal and needed no equalization whatsoever so what you will hear from this edition is as close to the master tape still in great condition as is possible, pressed as well as is currently possible on flat profile UHQR Clarity vinyl.

Fremer later corrected “2002” to “1995.”

Ordered myself a copy as well. I also have the MFSL 45 rpm set in addition to the Columbia 50th anniversary box set. It will be interesting to hear how this new upcoming version will sound like.

I told myself I did not need this. I have the classic lp 33/45.

I am weak and have preordered, just because you never know, maybe the vinyl formulation is quieter and that’s worth it.

Analogue productions always sounds good and im a weak soul. So ive ordered.

I have a 60s print that sounds righteous but its beaten up. The 80s print i have is rubbish.

These tapes are now over 60 years old. Do you think that the old tapes can have more detail and air than previous releases?
Yes
Based on that fact, the first reissue is the one to go for (when done right… for example classic records first run 180gr)
The originals get the ok from the artists when the mastering is done … so that one is authentic, all others are something else …. Shifting / boosting frequencies are not original … when you like that, go for CD and save a small fortune
I think, they have already milked Kind of Blue to death

Good point, the UHQR release at $100 is probably priced as high as the market will go for one more release.

Does anyone know about the mastering details of the MFSL SACD release?

Aren’t there already too many reissues of KOB ? Wish Chad got a little more creative on this latest UHQR release. The amount of money people probably have spent on reissues of KOB would of gone a long way to buy both the original stereo and mono releases which are superior to the reissues.
Good to see you around these parts Christian.

You have a point on the number of re-issues, but why would people prefer to own versions that were partially cut at the wrong speed?

Do you think that people who keep their LP speed accurate to five figures can sleep well after listening to old issues? :)
