Taiko Audio SGM Extreme : the Crème de la Crème

But Mike, without picking at the usual analog v digital argument, and no matter how close Extreme/Select is taking you to bliss, I know that you like all guys innoculated to lps, still love the whole ceremony.

If I had the cash, would I want a modern high performance Porsche where everything is taken care of, or a Singer restoration 70s or 80s 911, where the ride is truly more visceral and in the moment.

Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear has often admitted he hates the current move to ABS and full automation of the driving experience.

I like old 911's vs. the new ones. In a prior life I had a '77 930 Turbo, an '87 911 and then a '97 911. I know a few friends with the latest 911's and yes they are great, but I would take that '77 930 wide body over any of the new ones.

ALTHOUGH this has NOTHING to do with how I feel about audio.

preference and taste are impossible to apply objectivity to.

personally when i bought my 2016 911 CS2 three years ago my view was that the 991 series was a far superior car to any previous version. in any objective way. and most vintage Porsche fans agree objectively. on the track the new one's smoke the similar level older model.

but many older Porsche's are hugely desirable. the smell of burning oil is irresistible to Porsche and Citroen lovers. i recall learning to double clutch my 61' TR3-b too in 1969, and thinking about that does bring back a few fond memories. but the PDK in the CS2 works much better. do my memories or nostalgia have value? sure. would it be fun to drive that old Triumph right now around the block? sure.

Mike, my OCD riddled thought process makes these connections, totally OT lol. I'll sign off, keys out of the ignition.

Not just yet, I plan to trigger St.Greta of Thunberg's crowd a little while longer.

I'm just about to buy a current modern car, the epitome of reliability and fuel economy. It'll be up against my hugely tactile and "in the moment" 1968 Citroën. The driving experiences will be very different. Will I naturally veer to modern and fuss free?
A 1968 Citroen is like a giant carpet slipper for the road. You can’t help but miss that!

Oh, running both cars. The Cit will be more for high days and holidays. I refuse to not cruise.

The best I’ve heard remains industrial grade M12 networking. However ~USD 5000 for a switch is a tough pill to swallow. I’m experimenting with cheaper M12 switches. So for now said:
JPlay also has a slightly cheaper M12 alternative to the gold model, which costs EUR 2,550: https://jcat.eu/product/m12-switch-magic/.

M12 MAGIC SWITCH has just been reviewed by Wojciech Pacu?a, chief editor of High Fidelity

The article available in Polish. English translation will be posted in December

I think we need Emile to tell us what works best with Extreme In his opinion.
After that every one will follow.

Tekegartner gold m12
Telegartner magic
Ether Regen
2x Ether Regen
2x Ether Regen + Cybeshaft 10 mhz
Sotm
2x Sotm
2x Sotm + Cybershaft 10 mhz
Qnap 308
Moded Cisco

There are so many options !

How about a very brief summary; state-of-the-art or middle of the pack.power supply used, major highlights of the sound differences it made. Thanks:)

I am confused on the Tekegartner versions - they have the Magic at euro 2550 and the Gold at 4165. What is the difference between them?

M12 Gold is the best of telegartner swich .
M12 Magic is lower grade telegartner swich.

I think Emile is testing them both and hope he will get EtherRegen soon to give us
clear vew of what works best with extreme.

In case M12 is best we can try organize a group purchese with Marcin :)
Marcin is a great person and very talented audio businessman.
Also please note his jplay classic is the program playing in Extreme !
(as an exit from roon library )

Hi Kris,

I have M12 switches from a different brand. I don't know how they stack up to the Telegartners, but they are good.

I was a bit late for ordering an Ether Regen, I'm in the December batch.

Kris, don't exclude world's first...Paul Pang QUAD switch.

Fancy FOUR Telegartner Gold M12's to compete w this quad switch, at 60% the cost of an Extreme!?

The most important differences are in the type of connectors used, build quality and the quality of supplied cables; the M12 Magic uses M12-D coded connectors (only 4 pins) while the M12 Gold is equipped with M12-T coded connectors (8 pins and each pair is shielded internally). Below you can see the M12-T coded build

And here both switches and cables next to each other.

What is the difference in sound quality between the two? in short: m12 magic offers lighter, younger sound. M12 Gold offer mature sound with fuller spectrum and insight into the recording.

One has to hear what it does to the system. I compare the effect to using a hi-end power conditioner or power strip.

Regards,
Marcin

Hi Marcin,

That should automatically make the Magic a 100Mbit switch. The Gold is a 1Gbit switch then I assume?
