List Some Of Your Favorite Foreign Films With English Subtitles

Together is an absolutely wonderful Chinese film and has some appeal to music lovers

Raise the Red Lantern is another excellent Chinese film.

The original La Femme Nikita or Nikita is easily one of my all time favorites and is worth seeing even if you are familiar with the various remakes.

A +1 from me on RtRL and LFN, they should not be missed!!!!

I refuse to watch movies with dubbed soundtracks - happily I am able to easily understand french and english, and a little italian and spanish, so it covers most of the movies I see. But I always get the version with subtitles. IMHO dubbing spoils most of the original drama of the movie.

Darn!!!

I find myself agreeing AGAIN with Microstrip ... I'll take the subtitles, the same way I take the black bars to properly frame the picture on the screen or the Libretto in English to understand what is being sung in an opera ... To look at it from a different perspective, think about listening to Queen " A Night at the Opera in French !!!!

Now some movies that came to mind .. There are many, many others.. I love movies ... ;)

“The Life of Others” is a Masterpiece... One of those movies that will figure in the annals of Cinematography. Not much to say about it except that is is superb.

“Cinema Paradisio” is another Masterpiece … One of my favorite movies and IMO one of the 10 best movies ever…

Hero is a very beautiful story visually spectacular. On a large screen with great color accuracy and contrast it is a joy to simply watch and see the story being told almost with colors dialog is optional...

“City of God “Brazilian … A poignant hard, movie. A level of violence that is almost unreal... Alas, it is more than common in some parts of the world and even , often (pardon the overuse of adverbs) under our own noses … vide what happen in LA or other inner cities gangs or sometimes in the suburbs. A MUST see …

“The Namesake” Indian … A story that many immigrants can relate to whether they move from another country to the USA or from one city to another anywhere in the world... Discovering Love and the real value of tradition of one own culture of the marriage of one’s culture with that of the adopted country …

“After the Wedding” Danish. The story of true Love. Acting is extraordinary. The kind of actors that are about their crafts and not much the “star” culture so prevalent in Hollywood. A simple pace of a story of Love and decency.

“Pan’s Labyrinth” Spaniard. A fantasy but with so many serious overtones … This movie is not a romp in fairyland. No it is the exploration of human beliefs and strength and yes of the role of the Fantastic and of mythology in our lives. Strength comes from all corners including from the bad (very bad Guy) … Cinematography is beyond superb and the story simply flows … Special effects are so well integrated. If you can imagine that can be scary, poignant and heartening. That is one of them.

“The Taste of Others” French … Beautifully made movie … Interesting exploration of others cultures and others ways of looking at things. . Now to conclude this movie was nominated for some award which escapes me. The Lead Actress (Agnes Jaoui) had prepared a speech that had these lines: "It is sad and even dangerous not to know that other cultures exist."

Oh I was going forget "Mongol" Russian (not Chinese) but with a Japanese for the Lead Actor and a Mongolian Lead Actress ... Very, very good. An interesting light on Genghis Khan .. A conqueror who seem to be remembered for his brutality and the span of his empire. What is not well known about him was the strength of his wife and how she help him build civilization. His empire wasn't about simply plundering the people he conquered but incorporating and having them participate and enjoy the wealth of the entire empire ...

A film not for the entire family but I found it to be a great story even with all the sex, Sex and Lucia. Also the classic Le Femme Nikita, and Cinema Paradiso among many others.

Can't forget La Dolce Vita!

Just watched Amélie. Wow. Just wow. What incredible and creative writing. I don't care how much you hate movies with subtitles. You have to watch this movie. So clever the writing. So well done the cinematography. Did I say clever writing? I was glued to the screen. No multi-tasking or you would moments of greatness captured in just one subtitle. How do people get such creative skills? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0211915/

I never put French subtitles. :) ...And I get away with Spanish & Italian. Well, sort of.

* I am totally perfect bilingual (French & English), and get the main lines from Spanish & Italian.

Alors Micro, tu comprends parfaitement le Francais mon ami? :)

Boy, I can imagine how big your film library is, LordoftheRingsEE. :)

Some I don't have, I've seen from renting them and from the library.

And when you look at this short list, these are great Foreign Films for sure.

Here I live in Canada, just across the U.S.A. border, so we're in a world of pain! And the world is much bigger than America!
And we know zip about Cinema from other countries like France, Russia, China, Japan, Thailand, Africa, Egypt, Sweden, Italy, Mexico, Argentina, etc.
Hollywood is just a very small and restricted blip in the entire picture of our planet and its people.
It's a retarded view overall, with a sign of $$$. The true great films by true 'cineastes' are very few indeed among all the junk produced in America, and that is a direct reflection of our mentality and our capitalist society.

True Cinema Art is beyond those boundaries created by men, and fly above his own destruction of true values...
Movies are the true mirror of who we are!

And some people would like you to believe in standards in movies more than in music!
What?!!

Europeans are wiser I think; they have more history, Art history, both in Cinema and Music...
Not hard at all to see...

Agreed. The soundtrack by Yann Tiersen is delightful too:

It's been awhile. I'm going to have to revisit Amelie. I recall liking it a lot, but I need my memory refreshed.

One of my favorites was the painter pointing a camera outside a store clock, showing it on a TV inside his room so that he didn't need to keep setting his clock!!!

"Amelie" on Blu-ray by Alliance Films Canada.

Alright alright alright! Usually it is a no no but in this case here with "Amelie" on Blu-ray,
you want to get the Canadian version by Alliance Films.

Please get it; "Amelie" is simply a 'cinematic masterpiece' in my book as well. :)

'Amelie' Blu-ray Review

P.S. Hey, Amelie & Amir, sounds like a good match to me! :D

Amir, Welcome to the Amélie fan club! I've watched it several times since I first saw it in 2002. After seeing this, I'll watch any movie with Audrey Tautou and any films directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. It's well worth checking out some of Jeunet's other films.

There are four Movie titles directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet in my prior list, including "Amelie". :)

I like "A Very Long Engagement". Give it a rent Amir. ...Audrey is in it! :)
Of course, she's Jean-Pierre's favorite!
