Master Built-What are Owners Hearing That They Didn't Hear With Other Cables

If I ever sell all my gear. I would start all over again just keeping my current AC/IC cables. (Echole Signature)

Is there really only two companies that impedance match their XLR?

After some thought I think I know the secret to MB cables but I'm not spilling any beans.

Well PM me I want to know lol

Leif,
Its been over a month since I asked my question about impedance matching. As far as I know, I never received a reply. Please be kind enough to respond to my original question from 10/21 and again on 10/27, if possible.

Leif is in Singapore right now at the audio show with Damon as they have the world launch of their new Ultra 11 and then on to Manila. He won't be stateside until Dec 4th

I think for analogue audio signals, the frequencies are too low. The wavelength is much longer than cable length. No need for transmission line theory. There is really no need for impedance matching.

Hi Marty,

I did answer this in post #295 and post#296 by microstrip nailed it as well. The only time you would impedance match with I/C's is if that piece of electronics had some sort of special requirements.

Near the end of October, I had to return all MB cables, except for the signature SC which I already purchased, to Jack for use in the audio show.

I decided to replace the Stax amps with the Spectral DMA360 series 2. These MB cables are very influential. I could not detect any sonic difference. It seemed like the amp is irrelevant as long as the SC from amp to speaker is MB.

My bedroom system which consisted of the 47 lab flatfish, Berkeley alpha, Spectral DMA 100S, and Yamaha NS 1 speakers without any MB cables was no longer inspiring to turn on. My time was spent watching HGTV, HBO and Star Movies. When Leif and Damon confirmed their visit on December 1, I decided to replace the Yamaha NS 1 with the Von Shweikert VR 1 so that at least for Damon, there will be a familiar part in the chain. Then, one day when Super Mario was in my place, I decided to move the MB signature SC back into the bedroom system. We fired up the system and just like the main system, the MB "magic" returned. I stopped watching TV and returned to being put to sleep by music.

December 1 comes around. This is the day I will have the pleasure to meet Damon again and meet Leif for the first time.

Mid afternoon and Jack arrives with Damon, Leif, and a very large suitcase full of MasterBuilt goodies. Introductions are made as they enter. Damon and Leif ask how I want to test the cables, do I want them to install them one at a time or do I want the full loom? Since I have been auditioning the ultra interconnects and signature speaker cable for several weeks already, I opt for a full loom of ultras in my main system and a run of signature IC in my bedroom system since I am already using signature SC in my bedroom system.

After installing the cables in both system, we take a short break to chit chat, to enjoy some cake, and for Jack and Leif to take their vitamins.

We start to listen to the main system. There is no bloom, no density of details since the cables have to be broken in. These are the demo cables used in the Singapore show. It is true that once moved, they need breaking in again. The projection of the ambience is exactly up to the ears when seated on the listening chair. The sound is effortless, natural, free from any stress and any personalities from the equipment in the chain. What got my attention was really the reproduction of the ambience. We played "Shenandoah" from 'Nature's Concertos' (FIM XR24 072), and it felt like being inside a Dolby surround theater.

Then we return to the bedroom to hear the system with the signature IC and SC. I'll leave it to my guests (should they wish) to volunteer a description of the sound from the sweet spot. I did not take the sweet spot since I usually listen off axis in the bedroom. But even off axis, I could "see" a soundstage. The sound was very free flowing, very smooth, very clean.

..Sam, how about posting photos of both systems?

I have pictures posted of Sam's main listening room. I never heard his bedroom system

I am still adjusting to the time change and will posting much about all my visits. This was a trip of a lifetime:)

Hi Gavin,

On your post #312, you can view pictures of my system in Members' Gallery: Mullard88's bedroom system, and, Mullard88's main system. There are updated picture in General Audio Forum: One Amigo visits south east Asia and hears some amazing systems.

Incidentally, Jack informed me that your cable should be with me in a week or two.

Sam

I have to admit I got worried when I saw the 360s after everything I've read and been told. Sam assured me things would be okay. Since Sam has one of the most extensive Spectral collections I've ever seen dating back maybe 2 decades, I trust his judgement. I'm not going to go hyperbole crazy suffice it to say everybody present was very satisfied with the effect on Sam's system.

The big shock is what Sam was able to coax out of 10 year old VR-1s from the long defunct budget line in his bedroom system. The combination of the Spectral stereo amp driven directly by a Berkley Alpha and fitted with Signatures was astounding. Leif and Damon were shocked as well. It goes to show that synergy really matters and that sometimes there's more to be had from things we take for granted. Hats off to Sam's willingness to experiment.

Great stuff Sam, I would love to listen to your systems, some day...
