Vitus / Gryphon

Never heard Gryphon Colosseum . To me , Vitus Masterpiece excel in all areas unless you prefer the warmer sound of Mephisto . That's what I heard in my syst . A friend who heard the latest Antileon told me he like it very much ... at least for the $$$

Ok, good to know - to me, Vitus is both expensive and the 100w might be lower powered. Like the sound though. So a good reference. I will look at Gryphon Antileon/Colosseum vs Luxman M900 in the longer run, for restored apogee duettas. No hard preferences yet, just need a decent start point to demo around.

audioblazer, I, for one, would be grateful for your fuller and more detailed comparison of the Mephisto amp and the Vitus amp. Does either one in any sense have a sound analogous to a contemporary tube amp?

Go to Rhapsody and compare Vitus and high end kondo

Hey Ron, In addition to Audioblazer, you may wish to speak with Dato Han, your fellow Editor, who owned the Mephisto set for some time and also went to Vitus Masterpiece Ref Series.

Ron, as Ked suggests you can hear the Vitus SM102's and the Kaguras on the Magico M3's....you are always welcome.

interesting...so he listened to Mephisto and Vitus Masterpiece and chose Mephisto? What was the rest of his system and what were his reasons? I will go try to find it on Ashark

Not sure of his reasons. At this level I think it is a preference. He has one of the big focal speakers with grand prix Monaco and feickert firebird TTs

I think he choose between the 103 and the Mephisto , not the Masterpiece . There is a difference !

I want an amp with spectral jump and speed, Vitus liquidity and tone, and Bryston used price

Ron, we met briefly at the hotel in Munich at the morning Ubiq session. Would enjoy a visit if you make it to NYC. Give me a heads up when you are this way and we will have some listening fun.

Forte 4 amp (50 watts per channel, Class A)....probably $2-3K/second hand?

Oh wow will research Forte. Can it be bridged?

I think so...but sad to say, it is an OLD amp, and has not been in production for a long time. But in my own experience, it ranks as one of my favorite amps of all time. Yes, I still rate the Gryphon Antileon and Colosseum higher, but that amp was so finely balanced imho and incredibly powerful for 50 watts. Not as unbreakably powerfuly as the equivalent Vitus 50watt ref amp i suspect (which i've not heard)...but really dynamic and SOLID. If you can find them in good working condition, they are a steal. and they have incredibly little if any grain as i recall.

Will need to find an engineer to mod them, that might be it
