Videos of Acoustically-Coupled Audio Recordings

My Ensemble Reference monitors with a Görlich mid-woofer (and KEF passive radiator in the back) were in fact less sensitive than my subsequent Reference 3A monitors. You had to turn up the volume control slightly more in order to get the same playback volume.

The speakers were very easy to drive, however. I could drive them with my old Audio Innovations Second Audio parallel push-pull triode monoblocks (15 W/ch) to rather high SPL with very good dynamics, which were positively commented on by visiting audiophiles.

The amps never made the impression that they ran out of steam, the speakers seemed to be an easy load on them, an effortless drive. But it also depends on the actual driver composition of the speakers. A single 5 inch mid-woofer is apparently easier to drive than a larger woofer. I heard those amps on a floorstanding speaker with nominal 96 dB sensitivity but relatively large woofers, and they were positively "dying" on those speakers. It was a lifeless sound. What looks good on paper doesn't always work in practice.
If I remember correctly the woofer was pretty small..

Welcome to the video appreciation club Ron.
Haha. Thank you. This video was the exception that proves the rule. Hearing what I heard on the video combined with my expectation for the speaker system reached for me some kind of sonic statistical significance, which is rare.

Still, I will respectfully decline membership in the club.

Imagine your system next to this system, would it sound as dynamic?

Ok, I'll admit that yesterday I made the mistake of listening at a too low volume. Today I cranked it up, and that's much more like it!

As I specified in my post.
Right…see it now. Anyway, my Hornings are easily driven with 3.5 watts and have 8 x 8 inch drivers per speaker along with the 5 inch modified Lowther and a paper cone tweeter. Easy to drive as any speaker I know and has 10 drivers per side.

Still, I will respectfully decline membership in the club.

Not acceptable @Ron Resnick . I prepared a special recording of Send in the Clowns to make sure you join :)

Just make sure to turn up the volume @Al M. as YouTube reduced the recording almost 8db!

Someone mentioned the Rode VideoMic-Me C+:

Here are two videos, one taken with the iphone’s build in microphones, and the other with the Rode.

My phone was close to my head, and you can hear me breathing in the first, less in the second as the Rode is more directional.

It would have been better to place the phone on a tripod, but I don’t have one.

Note: the recording volume is lower with the Rode mic.

Both sound flat and synthetic. No life or energy. Meh.
The point is not to comment on the sound of the system - moreover I would not expect any unbiased and positive comments from you after I gave my negative comments on your videos :)

You fail to notice the difference between the internal and external microphone, which are pretty obvious…

I prefer landscape perspective/orientation to portrait.
I doubt phone orientation makes much of a difference, and certainly not with the rode microphone.

Or the room is too big or both.

Don’t think recorder is that far back but difficult to say. I checked, amps seem to be Thivan Labs which are usually low watt triodes and such, maybe they have made a slightly more powerful amp for these Wilson type speakers but as always these need the likes of Dagostino

They demoed their own speakers on the last day. The Wilson was purchased by a guest right after that.

Sounds good / Dynamic
What amplifier is playing ?
The amplifier was Mavis E1000P

These speakers sound better.

PeterA’s comments on the videos vanished. Anyway, the point of the comparison was to illustrate the use of this small and cheap USB microphone. Because it is so “directional” it picks up much less reflected sound than the build in microphones of my iPhone, and also in comparison to my ears. The sound is too “dry”. Perhaps some middle ground would be nice and offer something closer to the in-room experience. The iPhone build in microphones are not perfect but they do a good enough job.

Where are the losses coming from then? With that light weight, diameter (you said 10 inch, right?) and magnet field strength the driver should be high 90s, not low 90s. Something isn't right in the specs...
The specs indicate extremely low mechanical Q (2.13 and lower depending on size), probably because most of their drivers have little or no ventilation, besides most (if not all) are designed to work in small enclosures for the respective size.

Greetings from Switzerland, David.
