A neat idea from Jim Smith on subwoofer setup...

Not much to show, but…..
I was able to (easily) play a bit with the angle of each sub. First few cuts played show promising improvements.
Thanks. Nice set up!

Jim Smith came over Saturday and we tried something entirely new which was raising the subwoofer up off the floor to align vertically (driver domes) with the lower woofer on my main system. The point is to get the woofers "working together."

Honestly, I was very skeptical and wasn't sure I wanted to lift the heavy subs. Fortunately I had two solid wood amp stands that lifted 4" exactly and worked sonically, if not quite aesthetically. I can eventually get one of the HRS platforms to work I believe and in black it would match the speaker hardware.

We also found that moving the subs (which are on the outside of the mains) closer to the mains paid dividends in sound quality.

The results are quite spectacular. Much more smoothness in the bass and the spatial cues are even better. I am super happy with the results.
I have to give you credit for being late to the party but you finally arrived LOL. Try using a EVP or a serious quality footer , like the Carbide's, under the subs and you will get some real improvements. I am not a spike guy and with all the interesting devices that one can use under speakers and especially subs there are a lot of room for improvement in doing such.
BTW a wood amp stand would not be a choice except as an experiment, seek and you shall find Sir!

These results are due to increased height or the woofer, leveling with Alexia woofer, or to the decoupling of the sub from the floor?

We believe leveling with the Alexia V woofer allows them to work together.

The problem is that considering the involved wavelengths they always work together. An interesting experiment would be raising them an extra 4". ;)

All I can tell you is that doing this lift created noticeably better sound.

A major consideration in the design of the Loke was that it should create a more realistic presentation for the Tune Tot. As such, its specs indicate that 250 Hz is the upper limit of its bandwidth. 250 Hz is quite high … certainly well outside of the normal range for audiophile subwoofers. It is more like a woofer, especially with the Alexia V which has comparably sized bass drivers.

Then there’s the onboard, compact, solid state amp that drives its cone.

And its floor coupled horizontal port is in play too.

I’m speculating… but if you like it better off the floor, I wonder if you really aren’t trying to create something closer to the Alexx V. By aligning it with one of the other woofers, I’m wondering if maybe you are enjoying the solid state augmentation of your main tube amp.

I dunno … I also wonder if there are room issues that the Lokes help mitigate. Perhaps the mitigation is better off the floor. Perhaps in another room the idea might not give the same result. The wave lengths that the Lokes are meant to excite are from a bit over 4’ to a bit over 50’. The room is unlikely to cooperate for wavelengths over 20’ (mid 50 Hz range).

It is very hard to know for sure what is causing the improvement. I think the best policy is to not let this unclear explanation get in the way of enjoying the improvement.
