Super Bowl LIX halftime show

Can't beat Michael Jackson, Rolling Stones, or Prince and today's top artists aren't in the same league IMO, but the NFL is giving the fans what they want. Young people like rap, I like some from the 90's but don't really enjoy the new sound but I don't value people based on their listening preferences either.

The truth is, I am not a big fan of rap music and I didn’t “get” the message….but I do respect that alot of people are and do.
Didn't know Lamar was awarded a Pulitzer. Thanks for pointing that out.

I didn't pose the initial question to criticize other people's taste in music. When I hear something as foreign as rap to my ears, I want insight as to its merit and attraction for others. Hard to relate when you can't understand what the performer is saying.

What I do have an issue with is the prevalent use of profanity in R and B as a "message" and a means to insult and disparage others. I see no positive to that.

Best.

Thanks for the thoughtful response.
Yes, I struggle with that part as well.
My original post was not to compare Kendrick Lamar, or rap, to Shakespeare, or his literature, but to posit that our appreciation and acceptance of things can be strongly influenced by our exposure and perspective.
I still remember when rock and roll was going to rot our brains and likely be the end of civilization as we know it.

This was a well done performance aside of words i could not understand , but the message was red white and blue and that was great to me.
Thanks for pointing that out but I must be honest. Due to the unintelligibility of the lyrics, I missed the "message". A side comment. I view music as means to unite, not to divide.

It went over my head. I got "it" from you tube videos. PM me if you want more.

Good for you, I don't respect 'any' of those people ...... ;)
I'm not sure I understand whether you don't respect "those people" who are rappers or "those people" who like their work.
I have two daughters who are in their thirties. One is a veterinarian and the other is a leader in the national office of a large global wildlife conservation organization. They're smart, funny, responsible, tax-paying women (and half of their faces are in my profile picture). One plays clarinet and the other flute.
I raised them on 70s and 80s rock and I'd guess that more than 50% of their music collections consists of "my" music.
Nevertheless, they both enjoyed Kendrick Lamar's halftime show, as did their friends at the large Super Bowl viewing party they attended.
I don't get it. But my grandfather never got Bill Evans either.

Kendrick Lamar opened by saying, “The revolution will be televised.” The salvo harkened to Gil Scott Heron’s influential, “The revolution will not be televised”, which was recorded in 1970 and 1971. It is widely known in rap circles to be one of the biggest influences on early rap artists. The song falls in the “jazz funk”, “spoken word” and “proto rap” genres. Lamar’s opening frame might mean little to most of us, but I’m confident it reverberated through a multigenerational Black American audience. At a Super Bowl where “End Racism” was scrubbed from the end zones, Kendrick Lamar’s performance, together with Samuel L Jackson, pushed back against the idea that America has overcome racism and is prepared to now “Choose Love.” By all the accounts I have seen and heard, it appears Kendrick Lamar hit his mark.

lets put it this way, any rapper that promotes violence and any person that likes that sort thing I despise. As for the genre itself, I wouldn't waste five minutes listening to it..........

I can’t see how entertainment has to go on directions knowing the percentage of people who maybe be offended.
Rap when done slower and you can understand the words has some impact
Think biggy or mnm or ones before them.
I think the super bowel halftime show needs to be a mix of genre at least to keep most people there.
I did watch all of it hoping to get something
Did not seem to happen but did love the theme of colors that alone is way more then many rappers of today.
I am soon to be 68 and do still love most genre including some heavy metal.
someone said to me we never get past a certain age in our lifetime in thought
Imagine an older dude in a convertible blasting led zep while playing air drums
the looks lol.
for this reason I think who ever liked That has to have there time and place too.

Your correct in violence but I don’t think it’s what there inherently thinking.
just play some rage in the machine is it really that difficult for draw a line

You despise kids(like mine) that enjoy rap...classy. So sophisticated:rolleyes:

your reading comprehension is off, that's NOT what I said !
Twitch,
I'm really not offended and assume you have no feelings about my kids but I have to point out that someone that hasn't listened to five minutes of rap isn't really qualified to say much about it. Tupac, Biggie, Snoopdogg, all mainstream at some point and all gangsta rap with violent lyrics, so do you despise the rapper and the people that like that sort of thing like you mentioned above? Previously you responded to Glide3's quote that you don't respect 'any' of those people, my reading comprehension tells me you are bitter towards rap music and you like to generalize. I do like your name though.

I wonder when Jay-Z's contract with NFL to run the Super Bowl half-time shows will end? Evidently, a few months ago it was extended

For the record, my response was more or less to what Gordon(the Op that started this thread) had said/asked. As for 'feelings towards your kids', no, none of what I said was directed towards them(assuming they don't condone the violence crap). As for gangsta rap, if that encourages and or promotes violence, then again, yes it's garbage. Can you at least agree with that ?

As for my generalization of rap, I'm not bitter, I simply don't like it .........

@twitch are you using "rap" and "gangsta rap" interchangeably? Do you consider Kendrick "gangsta rap"? Do you consider Kendrick violent? Can you please clarify what you mean by "those people"?

Fair enough. I’m good with your opinion about rap music but not its listeners. It was the most viewed halftime show of all time. I don’t condone violence, I’m a peace through strength type of guy and am ok with John Wick and Dr Dre .
