My experience (and I'm offering nothing more than that) is that one set up including cabling, power devices, isolation devices and even sources and speakers, may optimize the sound of one set of electronics, but once you put in another set of electronics then to really hear the true capability of that component(s) you might have to alter "the recipe" to hear the performance ceiling of that particular set of electronics. I very seldom can just substitute one variable in "the equation" without recalibrating everything else, if in fact I am trying to optimize the overall performance of the system. Again, just my two cents.
