Agreed. Though to be fair to DH she is an exceptional jazz pianist. In a modern jazz context her 'Live in Paris' is among the best I've heard

Agree. She is good at what she does. It's not Ella, or Bille or Sarah but that's OK with me. Do any of the other great singers of the past play piano as well as she does?

Is this Jazz? If it isn't, it should be.......

Sorry to derail from Ms. Krall, but I'll take this any day.

That record sold more equipment than Jazz at the Pawn Shop. I would say it was some sort of Rock R&B fusion

Fine lines IMO. It's edgier for sure, but jazz to me is about emotion and interpretation...and RJL has that, and not just on the example I provided.

sorry to derail from RLJ, ill take Amy every time - she was perfect

Aslo, RLJ is not 'proper' jazz

Was Amy Winehouse the best Jazz female artist of the 21st century

In my view - yes she was

---- Both Rickie Lee Jones and Amy Winehouse are in a total different category than Diana Krall. ...Totally different style of music, different vocals, intonation, attitude, and just plain and simple different. ...And the true level of artistry is just not the same.

To compare these three female artists is like comparing Classical music with RAP and PUNK.

If unfair to compare DK to the greats. it might more fair to compare her to this guy. He is tota
lly lakcing in any musical ability. Yet his heartbreak is clear.

I agree, they are very silly comparisons. I enjoy DK's piano playing and her singing, especially when I am in a mellow mood. By the way, her CD from a jazz festival in San Sebastian in 2008 (?), Doing All Right, shows her strutting her stuff in concert as a jazz pianist-singer. Not well-recorded, but tasty. Amy Winehouse and Diana Krall? What about Adele and Diana Krall? Vive la différence!

-- ...Never heard of him.

* So Greg, you think it's 'unfair'?
I cited an extreme example to make a point. Any competent musician can play the classics. No doubt she is technically proficient. What distinguishes the great from the average? The ability to provide variations on theme, interpretation.and emotional presence.
From lighthearted fair to tragic renditions. When some artist perform a song others don't want to go near it anymore.
I just don't get that form her. YIMV

P.S. Just saw DK on the Colbert report. Nice.

Last week I picked up the 2-LP version of this CD. Sounds much better on vinyl, Diana in big-voice mode, playing jazz with the quartet and enjoying herself. Great stuff.
