I can take her or leave her. Her voice kind of annoys me....there's an awkward weird inflection in her tone and speech pattern. I have her Live In Rio Blu-ray and I will say the girl knows her way around a piano. Bottom line....not a fan.

Krall's voice seems to have changed in recent recordings. In Quiet Nights she adopted an intimate whisper which kind of works when you get used to it, but I prefer her real contralto in the earlier works, stressing those Ls. Listen however to 'A Case of You', on the Paris concert disc, heartbreaking and boozy. And she does have a Canadian accent sometimes, for example her pronunciation of the word 'heart'. That makes me very comfortable.

A short review of Glad Rag doll I posted recently

Diana Krall - Glad rag doll ( deluxe edition) 2012
So Charles Dickens and DK have something in common? "A tale of two cities" was one of the great fictional works of the late 19th century, set in London & Paris. But this record sounds like it was set in perfect/proper/pedestrian Singapore (first half) and sexy/salacious/sultry Rio De Janeiro (second half) So yeah, Im a little confused. In a nutshell DK & Co show all of her/their technical excellence in the first 9 tracks or so - then suddenly the cut comes alive with, well humanness/honesty/heart. I'll take the last half dozen any day of the week! So, is it a classic of the early 21st century & worth your hard earned? NO. If your a diehard? maybe

If you want to know what's wrong with Diana Krall just listen to Billie Holiday sing Good Morning Heartache. Could Diana convince you her heart is broken??

DK and BH have very different phrasing/expression/style - not entirely sure that's a fair comparison? 2 very different artists. BH is the better of the 2 two - just my 2bobs worth

Yes it's very unfair.:b IMO she is the Whitney Houston of Jazz. Her gif\ft is compromised by commercialism.

I agree that Billie Holiday and Diana Krall should not be compared; they play in different leagues. You prefer the music of BH, and that's valid. Me? It depends on my mood. Same goes for any comparison between the late Whitney Houston and DK. IMO, WH was just loud - strictly pop - and had no pretensions to be a jazz singer, at least to my knowledge. I don't think DK would be happy with that comparison.

I merely used it as example of the lack of emotion. Actually they all bring something to the table. I know if removed from commercial constraint, Whitney could knock it out of the park. I have an Impulse recording where Diana get's it right.
I think we all agree. Fame and fortune has a price.

exactly.

heroine was par for the course back then - they lived the blues! if you were to rank DK on list of great jazz songstresses against the likes of ella, sarah vaughan, shirley horn, dinah washington, rosemary clooney, peggy lee, anita o'day, et al she'd be way down the list.

Absolutely true. Diana Krall could never overcome her idyllic childhood and family life, in the idyllic part of Canada known as Vancouver Island, to really feel the blues.

-- DK is in the now, alive and performing live in the year 2013 (soon).

And the sound quality of 88% of all her recordings plus/with the performances of her musicians
(her own piano playing & singing, with her band) is good, very good.

Just listen to her first five CDs (SACDs) for a good taste of her.
{Like I said before; her last one is an exploration into her youth, a personal one.}

Is this Jazz? If it isn't, it should be.......

Sorry to derail from Ms. Krall, but I'll take this any day.

That record sold more equipment than Jazz at the Pawn Shop. I would say it was some sort of Rock R&B fusion

Fine lines IMO. It's edgier for sure, but jazz to me is about emotion and interpretation...and RJL has that, and not just on the example I provided.

Agreed. Though to be fair to DH she is an exceptional jazz pianist. In a modern jazz context her 'Live in Paris' is among the best I've heard
