Desert island R2R 1/4" 2 track master player

That looks like a beautiful part of Norway, one of my close friends from medical school is from Stavangar.

just nature. yet these damn cell phones keep us tethered......i was tempted to throw it overboard.:)

A number of years ago, I had a few days respite from my obligations as our teachers' association president. My spouse and I had decided to visit Puerto Vallarta.
We wanted to go horseback riding, which involved a trip on a small boat to an island. Well, I was the first one off the craft...I should have waited until we were nearer the shore. The water was deeper than I had estimated and a wave took the sand from under my feet. Basically, I was submerged.

My spouse delighted in this event and reported it was THE best thing that happened on our trip. It left me incommunicado and I actually had to exist on the beach without my mobile phone.

this is 35km south of Oslo close to the very narrow sound just before the inner part of the fjord opens up
it´s only 25 minutes from my home port and one of hundreds of natural harbours in our archipelago

hi long time
since one never knows how long the desert island stop will last, i might as well play it safe....

machine was calibrated by my tech when I picked it up so only
a little TLC is needed as usual

unfortunately one of the VUs inner scale panel had a broken bit
anyone one where to get new panel? it´s meant to unscrew, so guess spare part...the meter itself works fine

Beautiful machine!

I've seen vu meters on eBay. I have a spare meter bridge I need to sell as well.

thxs
Yes I´ve seen it as well
glued it so far and not visible
this machine will be recorder/copying machine
the other sans VU reproduce...

I assume you have a way to calibrate your reproduce machine, correct

played a few tapes last night and the difference between this last/latest  A80 and the other with full MTSL updates from Todor is huge!
cleaner , tighter, quieter, substantially better and cleaner bass, more harmonics, better extension
guess the changing of bearings will mean a lot too...

this week I´ve changed almost all the bearings in my first A80, except the tape sensors, the motors and the pinch roller assy
a little fiddling, but pretty straightfw job provided you have the Seeger pliers, particularly for the tiny bearings in the tape tension rollers.
even though the bearings didnt feel worn when in the machine, they felt as if they had sand in them once in my hand...
low hours on the machine is no guarantee; guess dried out after all the years
will be exciting to hear the result later...just waiting for the new stabilizer board from Todor...

Congratulations, Leif :D
Happy to hear of the improvements.
Which soundheads are you using?

butterfly heads, but have considered custom longlife specialised 15ips heads from Todor...
anyway I have a spare almost unused butterfly block I can convert/modify to anything I want....
suggestions?

Same here, except I decided to pursue it, since I have no documentation that it's ever been addressed on either of the A820's and I have a competent Studer technician
Otherwise, the bearings resident with the machines upon acquistion were quiet during all transport operations.

I'm using a Studer 1.318.730/736 headstack, presently; however, I don't think I'd seriously record with it due to increased crosstalk...I'll likely try it, anyway, to obtain direct experience.
Exacting electrical/mechanical parameters wrt sound head manufacture suggest working with acknowledged experts -- no surprise, here ;) In North America, John French and Greg Orton come to mind. John Austin, formerly of Sprague Magnetics, has recently customized a couple of headstacks for me and mounted them in their respective head blocks. I imagine Todor would render excellent service as well.

latest news....my A80 RC with VU is playing with new bearings, and its amazing how much this did to the sound...more solid, better 3D and quieter, more harmonics
all seems more relaxed
looking fw to hear the T mods on this one as well.
today I changed all Rifa X-caps in both machines and made a list of all the Frakos that are waiting to be replaced
now its safety master of Ben Webster: My Romance from Copenhagen 65
great session

Alright...that's fantastic :D

hi folks
now I´m finished changing all electrolytics, including counter pcbs in both machines as well as all bearings in the A80R as well
while waitng for the new custom audio psu from Todor I´m playing Ah Um reel 2 on the RC VU and I really like the enormous change in resolution and 3D due to the bearing change
everyhing is more relaxed and natural sounding
I wander if a change of motor bearings will have the same impact as well? anybody knows from own experience?
best
Leif

hi
listening to same reel again, but now the VU has gone through close to full Todor updates as my A80R as well, and the combo new bearings and T electronics, sure as H#&¤ represents a dream machine
resolution much increased, lower noise level...more extended and smoother HF
even my wife accepts this "trying jazz"...a very good sign....
if your A80 has stock electronics, you owe it to yourself to consider Todor Dimitrov of Mastertapesoundlab as one of your very attractive options for upgrading......
top notch upgrades, close and friendly ! support....
highly recommended
best
