YG Acoustic Speakers

I have the YG Hailey 2 and I have been switching between three amplifiers, the Boulder 866, Pass INT-25 and AGD Duet class D. All three amps work well with the Hailey 2. The Pass is limited in power for louder listening levels but it worked well for my nearfield listening - it has been almost a year since I tried the Pass and I need to try it again. I might have a slight preference for the AGD Duets with better imaging and detail than the Boulder 866. I'm using a PBD MPD-8 variable volume control with the AGD Duets (no preamp), and using the PBD MPD-8 DAC at fixed volume with the Boulder 866 volume control.

I could probably be happy with any of these amps, but since I'm not using the Boulder 866 streamer and DAC, I have it listed for sale on Audiomart. The YG Haileys are currently at YG for upgrade to 3, so I'll start the comparison over again when I get them back and will also be comparing to the darTZeel preamp and 108 amp.
Hi Rumpole , THX for the reply . AGD was also on my list , many good comment on AGD amps . In Brussels there is one dealer , looks also like a good option to try .

The dealer where I heard the devialet 440 pro on the Carmel 3 liked that combi the most , he had also ayre and Nagra classic but I did not heard them on de Carmel 3 myself .
Nagra classic was also on my list . Maybe I have to return to him to try them to .
But the Carmel 2 are a bit different than the Carmel 2 I suppose .

Another question is where the NAD M33 is in comparison with all the above advised amps in therms of sound .
Over the years I have had the Carmel 1s, the Kipod Signature passives and now the Hailey Reference 2.2.
All three have been remarkably neutral and delivered the different sounds of both the amplifiers I have had and the changing sources.
So getting the synergy you enjoy most from YG speakers does depend very much on what you pair with them. The Vitus integrated 025 and the 030 I use now have been very successful combinations, but you need the 030's extra grunt for the Haileys.

My question is witch amp wil get the best out the Carmel 2 within a 15000€ budget ?
In my experience, YG reference series speakers have a very high ceiling so they sound better and better as you climb the ladder of amps. Are you trading in the NAD or are you going to keep and use it as the preamp/DAC?

I was planning to replace the NAD M 33 , another all in one or a combination preamp dac with a separate poweramp / monoblock . Is it a good idee to keep the NAD and get a ( tube ) preamp ?

Many on this forum will endorse that idea, asserting that tube preamps are "magic," like audio is a Harry Potter movie. There are many threads extolling the "magic" of tubes. I heard the same things and had a tube preamp for ten years (Audio Research Reference Anniversary). I will never own a tube preamp again. It had a nice sound -- while the tubes were operating at their best, for a few months after re-tubing, sometimes longer but sometimes shorter. Changing the tubes in a two chassis preamp was inconvenient and cost $800.00 each time. I auditioned several solid state preamps over a couple of years but none could match the sound until I auditioned the Boulder 1110 in 2019. The 1110 exceeded the sound and blew away the tube pre on usability. I leave it on 24/7 (not possible with the tube) and run two systems plus a Home Theatre though it. I have auditioned tube amps and the Boulder 3060 was far better. So no more tubes for me. As previously stated, Boulder 866 would be my choice or 812/861.

THX Chuck , I wil look Into the 1110 in combination with the NAD . Is that better than de 866 ?
Later on I can remove the NAD for a other preamp

If you have looked into the 1110 you know it is a preamp that alone is a lot more than your stated budget. So, yes it is better than the 866, it is reference level "end game" territory. It would work great with the Carmel 2 speakers. I think you mean use the NAD as the power amp and maybe replace it later with a better power amp.

I finally made a decision, ended up ordering the Talus speakers. I brought my Coda S5.5 to the dealer to hear it drive the Talus as well as the Accuphase integrated the dealer had and loved the sound with both. The Coda S5.5 was more detailed but the Accuphase sounded amazing. Not sure which one I will use to drive them as I have an E-380 that I am using now as a pre-amp only at this time with the S5.5 as my amp. Very excited to get the Talus into my system!

I'm considering the YG Peaks series, Ascent or Summit, as a potential next speaker and had a few questions I'm hoping someone may be able to answer:

0/ Has anyone moved from a Dynaudio Heritage Special to YG and wish to share any notes of comparison? While the HS are excellent in many ways, I sometimes find myself wishing for a bit more realism and extension. I suspect I'd be trading off some warmth in exchange, which I would be ok with.

1/ Does YG make or plan to make speaker grills? I came across this Absolute Sound interview in which YG says they're evaluating designs, but it's not clear what the latest is.

2/ Do the speakers have a relatively low center of gravity and seem like they'd be difficult to tip over? I was also interested in the Carmel line, but they seem quite slender with perhaps equal weight distribution top to bottom.

My young child is going to be mobile very soon, so I have another set of considerations beyond the sonic qualities of my next speakers. I don't live near a dealer and am hoping to get a bit of insight before making any potential trip. Thanks!

I received my Talus speakers about 2 weeks ago and absolutely love them. They add so much realism and three dimensional sound to the room it is crazy.

I had a pair of Dynaudio Special 40's (still do, now in main TV room as part of my 5.2 system) and really liked those. While I had those my dealer gave me a pair of Heritage Special speakers to try out for several weeks. The HS were better than the SP 40's but I personally didn't think they were better enough to justify the price increase. I ended up buying a pair of Spatial Audio M4 Sapphire open baffle speakers and I felt those were substantially better than the HS speakers. Upgraded the crossover with some silver bypass caps and I thought they would be in my system for a long time. Then I heard the YG Talus, and for me it was the first speaker I heard under $20K that sounded substantially better than my M4's. The YG's are much more detailed, better bass, more realistic sounding, etc. I think you will be very impressed if you make the jump.

My Talus are very stable, in fact it is very hard for me to move them a couple of inches either way when I was trying to get them setup. They are on carpet with the spikes. Given the Cross over is at the bottom and the Ascent or Summit have an additional driver down low and weight more I thing they should be pretty stable, at least on carpet. Cannot speak to hard wood flooring. Either way I think they would be much more stable than the HS on stands.

Good luck with your decision.

Are you contemplating the upgrade? Would be most interested to hear what you think of the next gen XV3.
I finally heard the XV3 at Axpona and got my questions answered by Matthew and Duncan. Now I have to figure out how to do the upgrade.

Ah-ha! Congrats! Would love to read your impressions of how the XV3 compares and what particularly drew you to make the upgrade!
