The Irishman | Netflix /// Coming up

Earlier this morning there was a short article on Twitter's hangovers.
Kids (Star Wars and Marvel superhero comic books fans) who found The Irishman boring, and making jokes with gifs. They'll grow up one day, we all go thru our periods ...

I like to be entertained myself as well, and The Irishman starts as a road trip, same as last year's Green Book. Isn't it something ... Both films are a countryside road trip, the entirety...a strong connection for sure, and more...the drivers in each of these two films.

Kidding. Liked it a lot. Thanks for the suggestion.

I was 100% certain that it was good humor.

They don't make great films like that anymore.
So far (because 1917 still remains to be seen), The Irishman is the big Oscar winner this year.
...Without the shadow of a doubt.

Im betting that it will win more Emmies and Golden Globes than Oscars. Certainly if the Academy agrees with Spielberg that’ll be the case

Never bet against Reed Hastings.

It’s a disgrace,” said John Fithian, the president of the National Association of Theater Owners, a group that works closely with, and represents the interests of, chains like AMC Theaters, the largest in the United States, and Cineplex, which has 1,600 screens in Canada"

Of course Fithian is pissed off. If Hastings chose AMC theaters for the openings in NY and LA instead of the Balasco and Grauman theaters, Fithian would be singing Netflix's praises.

Steve, I think Spielberg has to come to terms with today's reality; Art in Hollywood Cinema is a new ballgame that goes beyond the traditions. Martin Scorsese wouldn't have make a masterpiece without Netflix financial support. I understand very well the big theater attraction and all ($$$) from Marvel and DC superhero and supervillain characters of comic books (amusement park themes), ... we are @ the edge of 2020, that's a new cinema reality. That is in my honest opinion that.

Hollywood movies are a cash register machine...in large vast general philosophy.
The big movie studios (Disney, Sony, Universal, Warner Bros, Paramount, ...) they bank on Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, Captain America, Wonder Woman, Fantastic 4, X-Men, Avengers, Fast&Furious, Godzilla&Kong, ...and the next batches of superheroes and sequels and monsters.

If the Irishman would have been supported by a major Hollywood movie studio with its $175 million budget you wouldn't hear anything against from me. And I still don't complain because I understand the business. It is what it is and count me glad that we have other venues for films like Netflix, HBO and other investments in the art of filmmaking.

I bet next year we'll see another great film or two coming up from Netflix's financial support.
Like Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro in The Irishman; it is what it is.

are you suggesting that major Hollywood studios refused to bankroll the film?

That’s interesting. Certainly the movie has been showing in theaters fir the past month to make it a legit candidate for Oscar contention. I’m just not convinced it is best Picture.
1917 is still to be seen.

also dont discount Knives Out as a nominee

To date this year my favorite remains Joker and Joaquin Phoenix as it was so different and unique. The Irishman is also excellent but no different than so many of Scorsese movies

I think The Irishman had more screen time @ the theaters than Roma?
I don't know exactly the number of days considered a "normal" film by the Academy standards.

* 'Knives Out' seems to be a fun film. It is rated the same as 'The Irishman' over @ Rotten Tomatoes and just slightly lower over @ Metacritic...and MRQE as well.
This is all relative, only our eyes and ears can evaluate proportionally. :)

Joker is unanimously an acclaimed film with uniqueness and exceptional acting performance from Joaquin Phoenix and all captured on digital celluloid (cameras).
The 8,000-9,000 Academy voters, I just don't know what their own vision or division is in regards to Joker...zero clue.
Best actor's performance, yes. Best Picture, The Irishman...so far.

Best actress, Renée Zellweger ('Judy') /// from my readings (I haven't seen).
So my opinion is worth zero. Nonetheless it's permissible to have one.

It's going to be fun this year again ...

Pesce for supporting makes sense. Apparently 1917 is a shoe-in for director and technical awards.

Don't dismiss Christian Bale for supporting. He was superb in Ford vs Ferrari. I think Matt Damon will get a best actor nomination as well.

I can't watch another Pesci/Deniro gangster movie, tooooooooooo cliché and Pacino has become very one dimensional in his latest movies.
david
I loved those movies it's just that these actors have been type cast as mafiosi so many times that they're boring to watch.
david

They're old timers, just like us, hardcore old actors ... like hardcore old audiophiles and old rock and roll stars.

He's too busy winning but Turdeau was available! Problem was no one would believe a sissy as mafiosi :).

david

A sissy Mafioso; yes. ...Both of them, actually three...Canada (PM), USA (King) & Mexico (Lord).

* Frozen II is playing in theaters; you'll go with the kids?
** Knives Out; interested with the wife?
*** Joker? It is still playing.

Did you see The Lion King (2019)?

? Joe Pesci is into music...jazz.

We watched The Irishman on Netflix last night. Was concerned about the length but it flowed well and we watched in one sitting.

Had a little trouble accepting Di Niro as Irish - he just doesn't look Irish even though they made his eyes blue in the movie. My wife picked up on the blue eyes, I missed it. I'm half Irish on my mother's side so I do have some basis for this opinion. :)

For all the talk of making the actors look younger, they still looked older to me than they should have for their 'movie ages." Then we watched the discussion with the actors after the movie and I saw that they did a darn good job - but you can only do so much. Guess I am in the minority on this one.

Still a very good movie and we enjoyed watching it. Worthy film as Scorsese's swan song - if that is the case.

It's interesting that the prevailing sentiment is the same one I share, a very good movie, long but not tedious but in the end another of the same type of Scorsese films from years gone by.

I don't hear anyone proclaiming this as the Oscar's Best Movie of 2019

as an aside we saw Knives Out yesterday which was a very fun film to see but once again we saw the trailer to 1917 and that looks like an absolute must see

I watched it the other night. Didn't know it was going to be 3 1/2 hours nor did I know it was really about Hoffa for the most part. (Note the restaurant he disappeared from is not the one they show in the movie. Correct name, wrong building)

I enjoyed it and was surprised how well they used the digital de-aging technology which I hear drive the price f the movie up quite a bit.
