I am working from home and the phone rings. My wife answers it in another room. A few seconds later I see her coming toward me with a very worried look saying to the caller that he is getting me. I ask her who it is. She says the police! My mind immediately goes to kids getting in trouble....

I say hello and the caller with Indian accent asks if I am Amir. I say yes. He says, "Sir, this is officer so and so calling from Crime Investigation Unit of IRS." Before I could say anything, he asked: "Did we call you or did you call us because you received our package in the mail?"

Still super worried I recall that line being what some spammers use where they leave you a voice mail and a number to get you to call them back. I said, "how do I know you work for IRS?" He said in a strong tone, "Sir, do you want my badge number?" I started to get suspicious at this time. I told him that the badge number was of no value to me and that he should prove to me he works for IRS some other way.

In a rather strong and angry tone, the caller said, "Sir, I didn't say I was part of IRS." I said, "I thought you did." He said, "No I am in the criminal division." I asked where he is located. He said Washington DC. I ask him to tell me what the address of IRS is there and he gave the correct one.

At this point, his tone changed and become like a kid trying to explain he hadn't done anything wrong. Almost being sure he is phony, I said, "this is getting funnier by the minute. Anything else you want to tell me?"

A few seconds went by and click, he hung up! :)

I have to tell you, this is the best scam there is. My wife fully believed them and I did too at first. My heart was beating fast. I am sure if I went along, the next thing would have been extracting personal info from us and stealing our identity, money, etc.

Looking online seems like this scam started last year. Please don't fall for it. IRS never calls you like this without sending written notices first.

You are a lot more patient or into having a good time outing these fakes than I am. I hang up on people regularly.

I say STOP STOP STOP STOP and I cut them off when they are speaking and I tell them to send me written information in the mail, since if they have my telephone number, they also have my address and a whole lot of other personal information about me and then I hang up on them.

I do the same but I'm not as polite as you Gary

You must be a terror! :p

Hmm, I am probably getting the same calls every day if the incoming area code 202 is any indication - Washington, DC. Thing is, I don't pick up the phone

We got that same call left on our answering machine. I called the number back but it was an unclaimed Magicjack number.

I just f**k with them [?can I say that?].

Conversation: Oh, my accountant must have made a mistake. Give me the address, and I will send out a check today. What is the address again? Who do I write the check to? How many $$$ should I send you?

zz.

I walked into my coworker having a similar heart attack moment with his wife just last week. She called in a panic to tell him that a collection agency called and threatened to take them to court if they didn't wire money immediately. She was completely on the hook because they were so scary and aggressive. My friend, worked up as he was, had to basically talk her down. When he finally got off the phone with her, he vented for a good while before coming back to a zen place.

Wow. There's gotta be a way to stop these idiots.

Just put them on hold.

Most of these are Robo-calls by a machine. Once a human being answers the call, the machine on the other end hands off to the caller. Once they get on, set your phone down so that the mouthpiece is close to the speaker on your TV, making sure that your set is tuned to a mindless reality show or infomercial. You'll be dropped from their call list very quickly.....

These guys have moved on to calling my wife now. Kept calling and calling. She told off the first one but they kept calling. Last time she said she was reporting them to the police. Will have to see if they call again. She said they all hand Indian accent.

A few days ago heard on the local news that a lot of people were taken and the estimate was that they had lost $1M and this is the people who reported it.

I suspect once the news broke, other copycats learned it and this thing is going on everywhere.
