When Marty , Russ and I were in Telluride last week Marty found this TED talk that is simply beyond description and a must watch. So thanks to Marty for finding this astonishing talk
Not only is she beautiful but she is a designer, architect and scientist and truly a visionary.
What she has been able to do is truly futuristic. I've watched it 3 times trying to put meaning to it
Is she not a visionary. People with such talent come by all too infrequently. She is so far ahead of the times that it’s almost scary that she can give you a glimpse of the future. How about making buildings with 3D laser printer
Her approach is the way of the future, designing with nature as opposed to designing against it and apart from nature. The division of architecture and the natural environment has been the fundamental split for humanity and nature since the birth of civilisation. We left Eden but now we need to look at exactly what we have built for ourselves. Highly conceptual but biomimicry is the design platform of the future for the built environment. Urban ecology is looking at the transformed nature of the built environment and replicating the systems and values of the natural world to make our cities of the future liveable... viable, bearable and equitable.
Civilisation is to build cities but cities that come out of nature reflect the origin of everything. In the beginning is our end... so every recreation is a transformative point in our potential ongoing-ness. The limits of consumption are tied to the limits of production. To fail to see our essential limits is then for us to essentially fail and the sum total of biocapacity is all that we have to work with. We are currently using over 145 per cent of the earth’s current biocapacity. Nature provides all. Resource minimisation through intelligent design is an essential part of the path to salvation. We have left the safe place of being nurtured by our environment and now have to grow up quickly to learn how to manage the system for all through time. The children of the earth now need to become the adults. This is a either a turning point or a tipping point. That choice is clearly ours.
When we perhaps reach our use by date as a species is when we completely forget where we come from and what we are and when we have no true sense of where we are going.
She is friend with Brad Pitt. She is married to a smart guy. I've learned more about her last year and recently ... in the last few months and last few weeks ...
Small world that Marty mentioned that TED Talk video of her.
We have similar interests in similar people, which I was already familiar with.
It's interesting to explore her further ... a very talented and beautiful woman indeed.
She is a brilliant person with an unusual combination of skills. That was a very interesting presentation, concepts I hadn't even considered. Thanks for posting that, Steve.
