I have found that many of the music recommendations by some of the Staff writers at
Stereophile have been excellent. The writer that REALLY stands out is Robert Baird.
He really is a musicologist with a great ear.

Baird wrote an amazing piece on The Unthanks. For fans of Sandy Denny, Pentangle, and English
folk rock in general. Simple angelic.

Also, Jesse Baylin, a real throwback, 70's style chanteuse...really nice:

Special mention for Stephen Mejias, whose musical taste I generally have nothing
in common (Drake, R.Kelly etc) with. However, he recommend this incredible album by Aidan Baker,
called Already Drowning. I bought the 24 bit WAV download. Riveting.

i havent seen the article but i like the unthanks and im a pentangle fan as you obviously are from your avatar. i highly recommend denny's box set "who knows where the time goes" and almost anything by fellow alum bert jansch "jack Orion" comes to mind. Cant talk about britsh folk/rock without mentioning the Fairport convention and fellow alum richard thompson, so much great musical output from him and then wife linda as well.

When i think of Sterephile music recommendations i cant help but think of their early "records to die for" which instantly became known as "records to DIE FROM" lots of snoozers on those lists.

I'm on on it! Have all of Denny's, Janch's, and Fairport's albums. Same for Richard T.

Forget Sphile RTDF...Baird is the man. No "reference" recordings, no audiophile drivel..just real music.

I like Robert Baird's writing, as well, but in all honesty cannot think of a recording I purchased as a result. OTOH, I have a bit in common (musically) with Stephen Mejias. More than a bit, really, and it's not just the cassettes. lol

Check out his columns archived on the SPhile website. There may somethings you missed.

Mejias is into some interest things. But I personally can't stomach commercial hip hop.

Same here. SM often refers to Kendrick Lamar, who can hardly be called commercial, even though the record is a hit. I have the 2LP. Then there's Drake, kinda light Hip-Hop (I have the CD), a favorite of his girlfriend's. It's actually not that bad. 3 stars on the Rolling Stone scale. Who did I miss?

R.Kelly!

Although it must be said he also is into some real esoteric electronica and experimental. I think he is a great asset or Sphile. A break from
the grizzled old farts. Hee Hee.:)

Interestingly enough, the music reviews is the only place where I find TAS much more helpful to me than S'phile.
