Samsung loses patent suit to Apple

well the reality of Apple shares IMO is only an issue for guys like me who bought the stock and added to it over the past 20 years. (I don't even want to tell you what I bought it for then). So I plan to hold for the short term at least

For those buying it now, there is a steep price of admission

Keith_W,

Microsoft's cash cow always was, and still is, Windows and Office. XBox breaks even, and the Internet stuff is responsible for HUGE, HUGE losses.
It's way different from Apple's situation. Apple has several SUCESSFUL product lines. Each, on their own, are capable of carrying the company forward. I still remember how hard for me was to get ahold of a MacBook Pro with Retina Display, an almost US$ 4k laptop, almost 2 months after it was launched. Apple sold these like hotcakes.
The fact that iOS sells way more doesn't mean the rest of Apple's business is doing bad. Macs are selling more than ever. If Apple dropped the iOS devices altogether TODAY, they'd still live and be a far healthier company than many.
And Google? C'mon, you must be kidding. Google has 1 product: advertising. Everything else is fluff, bait to attract us suckers and generate massive databases for them to sell... guess what, advertising! Android makes more money to MICROSOFT than to Google!
Keith, please, I understand your bias, I honestly do. I've watched Apple haters diss the company ever since it was on the verge of bankrupcy. But c'mon, don't spread misinformation and panic. Your market analysis is beyond wrong, it's almost criminal to suggest someone to sell Apple stock at this point, specially when you're praising sh*t like Microsoft stock...

I sold all of my Microsoft stock years ago and have never regretted it.

I agree with Alexandre. Keith, whether you love em or hate 'em you have to be crazy to suggest selling now

Interesting read Bob

Where's Keith ;)

"ITC says Apple didn't violate four Samsung patents with iPad, iPhone

This just hasn't been Samsung's summer. On top of Apple winning its earliest civil lawsuit against Samsung, the International Trade Commission has just handed out an initial determination that Apple didn't violate any of four Samsung patents (including two reportedly standards-essential examples) by offering the iPad and iPhone. While Judge James Gildea didn't publicly outline why Apple was in the clear, he added that Samsung lacks a domestic business that uses the patents -- important when it's trying to claim economic harm in the US. The verdict still gives Samsung at least four months' room to breathe while the ITC reviews the decision, but it's hard to see Samsung enjoying the reduced offensive strength when it's already on the defensive in American courtrooms."

For those not familiar with such legal tactics, instead of going to trial and fighting something for years, companies go to the government of each country in charge of trade and importation and claim foul. Many times they get lucky, especially if they are the local company wanting to stop the importation of a foreign company, with the result being impound of equipment in customs and no more import. Usually that results in the other company capitulating -- rightly or wrongly -- and paying royalties. The bar can be very low for such action.

The patents listed here are base wireless technology. I am surprised they did not win. I have to think them being a foreign company going after a US company is a factor.

Oh, I would take that one business from Google over everything apple has every day of the week and twice on Sunday :). The advertising market is huge -- much larger than computing -- and very easy for Google to monetize. It is a self-serve machine that prints money for them. In contrast, hardware development is a pain in the neck. So many things can go wrong there and of course it is highly competitive. No one is able to get the network effect that Google has with advertising.

That said, yes, Google has failed to create additional big dog businesses beyond search. Android has been good but it is given away in support of search revenue.

It is google for the simple reason that it indexes forums like ours! There is so much information in these forums. Most of the data I look for in Audio/Video these days comes from forum posts. The other search engines are missing in action here so I don't use them.

Me too! Apple's R&D costs are huge, since they demand to control "the whole thing" (HW and SW). Google's are, let's say, not as huge :)
Besides, I believe now that Google is more entrenched in its market than Apple is in any of the markets they participate (tablets, PCs, phones, etc.) So any day now a company is likely to rival Apple, while it'll take considerable effort to displace Google in its core market (search).
But, even though it's all smooth sailing there at Google, they haven't been able to launch any noticeable new products in the market, and that reflects in its stock... Other than Android and GMail, there's not that many "hits" out there for them....

Don't know if the 'no breaks' part was tongue-in-cheek, but if you don't even get the calls on your home court, maybe there was a foul.

The court in Korea did not validate Apple patents so they did get a much better outcome there.

Apple Reportedly To Seek Treble Damages In Samsung Case

Eric Savitz, Forbes Staff

Apple will ask U.S. District Court Judge Lucy Koh to triple the damage award in its patent case against Samsung to over $3 billion, The Korea Times reports, citing “multiple legal sources.” A jury recently found Samsung’s smartphones violated a variety of Apple patents. In some instance, the jury found that Samsung had willfully copied features from the iPhone.

The jury hearing the case awarded Apple $1.05 billion in damages; but the law allows the judge the discretion to award triple damages in the case of willful infringement.

Meanwhile, Samsung plans to ask the court to toss out the jury’s verdict.

---Here's how it truly works, and we all know that already.

1. We live in America, home of the free ...
2. We believe in capitalism and our politicians ...
3. The rulers are the riches ...
4. You invent one thing, you submit a million patents ...
5. You want to protect your investments and your inventions ...
6. If someone walks in your frontyard or backyard watch out ...
7. We have fun suing, making money, prosecuting, defending the guilty, and jailing the innocent ...
8. This is one aspect of our system and we learn to love it ...
9. Behind all facades there is a dark side ...
10. Having control of the market is power and power is corruption ...

* Apple vs Samsung is one thing, as seen from the surface, but it also goes deep to the core of our system of laws.
...Here, there, and everywhere.

It's about possessing and controlling your properties in the world of laws we live in.
...And beliefs are a very strong curse of actions ...

"Apple Accused of Ripping Off Swiss Clock Design in iOS 6

The hits keep coming for Apple's iOS 6. Amidst the backlash over its lackluster Apple Maps app, it appears that Cupertino is also drawing fire for the new clock app on the iPad.

As first noted by MacRumors, the Swiss Federal Railway (SBB) told one of the country's newspapers, Tages-Anzeiger, that the new clock icon within iOS 6 on the iPad (left) violates the railway's clock trademark.
The clock design used by SBB (below) was crafted in 1944 by Hans Hilfiker, and the trademark is now owned by the Swiss Federal Railway. SBB licenses the design to companies like Mondaine, but told Tages-Anzeiger that Apple has not secured such a license.

The paper said SBB will reach out to Apple in order to reach an agreement about the use of its clock...."
