With the exception of a few isolated cases the demos I have heard at dealer showrooms have been mediocre at best. Most of the auditions I’ve heard have been prearranged and carefully setup but seldom do I hear anything spectacular. The cost of the systems were not determining factor by any means.
Anytime I’ve walked into a store unannounced and sat in front of a system the sound has been mostly unacceptable, again few exceptions.
On the other hand, at the half dozen (or so) shows I’ve attended my experience has been quite different. I find most of the systems to be quite enjoyable and engaging yet the ongoing narratives by many of the industry “experts” seem to be how poorly (in general) these systems at shows sound.
I’ve read about how much the costs are as well as time and effort manufacturers/dealers, etc., put in and imo the overall sound is far and away way above what I’ve experienced in showrooms.
Does in some ways this overall negative feedback on the sound at shows influences your perception on the what you hear at home and second guess? Maybe think about spending?
