I think you misunderstand what they are trying to do. They are not doing this for themselves.

However, they are public figures and have the ability to bring attention to the problem to help others.

I am not telling anyone how to do anything but one day off does nothing. I don't have to buy what unqualified people have to say about serious complex issues. I read web MD last night so now I can tell you how to be an OBGYN?
I believe differently and I believe this only makes them feel better but changes nothing.

If a regular person objects to showing up for work then he/she gets fired. I think it's unfortunate that the celebrity of these athletes, the arrogance and petulance that that celebrity engenders, and their simultaneous abstentions from work which effectively protects them all collectively (a team can't fire it's entire team) allow them to get away with this shameful behavior.

I would be a lot more impressed if these athletes continued to do the jobs for which they are being paid, did not pretend that their political opinions are worth any more than their one vote, and then "protested" by donating their entire compensation to their favorite charities.
