Nagra T - grab it from me before I regret...

I bought this Nagra T early last year in a fair working condition and excellent physical condition, I ordered a missing roller from Nagra Switzerland (Mr. Bartels and I are now good friends) and modified it as per Ki´s advice to skip the internal audio card (easily reversible).


It worked very well for the first three months (it just needed a little help in the left arm tape leveler to finalize packing tape but played great (sonically better than my other three decks)) but since June it started to have problems at PLAY mode.


My tech guy had it since four months ago and finally gave up, his diagnostic relates to a TENSION problem that is fixable but above his head, the deck packs tape both sides, turns on and just has this mechanic PLAYBACK issue.


I do not have the time/willingness to go forward, as much as I like its operation, looks and sound, my family and work time eats all my remaining energy and I have decided to place it in hands of someone who wants it, either to fix it (could be a fairly simple thing for a knowledgeable technician) or use it as parts to sell or use.


I payed around 4.5K for it, plus 1.5K in parts and labour (including a nice Nagra stand) - it has Cine NABs.




I live in Mexico City, but will deliver at any major US city that has an International Airport at my cost, I will take it with me to avoid any possible physical damage and open to hear economical proposals.


I have more pics available if you are interested, I am sure I will regret selling it but really, I have no time to devote to fix it.

I had a bad experience selling to China, so I want to share it here "just in case":

Buyer payed via Paypal, and I shipped the Nagra (professionally packed) next day to the address given to me. Two days after I received a mail from him asking to declare a very low value so that he could save some tax import fees, but I had already shipped and insured at the transaction cost, then, after the deck arrived to China, custom agents asked for a lot of paperwork to release it (including the original invoice which I declared I was missing in the add description).

The buyer complained at Paypal and freeze my friend´s account, it took a lot of emails, photos (yes, I fortunately took pics of everything prior shipping) and almost a month to have my friend`s account back to life. a real nightmare!

I have heard similar stories around how difficult it is to ship to China, hopefully things will get easier and better as the country continues progressing and opening to the world.

That's too bad. I'm sure all of us have had similar experiences shipping abroad where the buyer wants to declare a lower value because of taxes/tariffs. It's not just China. I've had alot of the same from the EU.

Brazil is the worst. Taxes can be up to 120%, and once the object hits customs, it could be up to 2 months before you clear it.
Because of that, a lot of newbies buy on eBay, then once the object never arrives (because it's stuck in Customs), they file a complain, get their money back, only to receive the object (or at least a notice to pay the duties) after 2 months.
It's so bad that a lot of sellers simply do not ship to Brazil anymore, and Amazon actually collects the taxes and pay the government on your behalf, to speed things up.
If there's one thing Brazil is #1, is bureaucracy.

This is what happened to me. I was out $9k for amps that were stuck in customs in Brazil and the CC company wouldn't release the money to me. Instead they reimbursed him because he said he could get it out of customs. He eventually got them (I assume), because they were never shipped back.

I tried to claim it on my insurance, but they said I released the amps voluntarily.

It's bad mojo to get involved with declaring low values for the buyer's benefit. It's best to steer far clear of it. You see lots of ads where people tell potential buyers don't even ask to have the value lowered for customs.

I have never shipped anything internationally without declaring lower value. Never had a problem. I tell the buyer the carrier will only insure up to the declared value so if the item is damaged / lost he has a lot more exposure.

You only think that way because you're blessed to live in a country where the government doesn't try to rape you with taxes and duties, like mine.
If you lived here, you'd be very thankful of the folks that do accomodate us poor souls that live in the less developed side of the globe.

Buying from US into EU is a simple thing if you use a trusted carrier with brokerage services, but their fees are very expensive. However there is a key aspect - electronic goods arriving in EU must have been CE certified and labelled accordingly. Otherwise the equipment will be seized and in the best case returned after a few weeks at your expense.

This aspect can be problematic if, for example you need a spare power transformer for US imported equipment. The equipment was CE certified, but the power transformer alone probably was not. You will need a lot of certificates and paperwork to get it from customs!

Do you pay taxes on the income of the used stuff you sell on Audiogon/eBay, etc? In that case, this amount can be cross referenced w/ the amount declared to the post office, thus creating a risk.
Otherwise, I don't see it...

it's tax fraud, and you are a party to it if anyone wants to go to the trouble to investigate. there is an email trail too, as well as bank, ebay, audiogon or paypal records. on the other end the buyer could throw you under the bus depending on what pressure is put on them for disclosure. I could even see collusion between the seller/buyer in a third world country and their bureaucrats to extort money from you. stranger things have happened.

you are not innocent if you falsify documents.

would anything ever come of it. very unlikely. but not impossible. U.S.A. officials might co-operate or maybe not. I would never want to find out what could happen.

It sucks when you get stiffed sorry to hear about Flez and Bruces experiences.

If exporting gear i get payment in full via a bank wire transfer, did this recently with a guy in Russia that bought a dac. i dont doctor customs forms or declare lower values for anyone. I sold a classe and Pass amp to two different buyers in Brazil via ebay, paid through paypal but shipped to a verified address in the US. One of them was collecting his purchases and shipping them via container to Rio. I sold some gear last week to a buyer from china, when i refused to ship it to him he had his friend in San franciso receive the item and that fellow paid me with a USPS MO.

I limit taking paypal for payments with the exception of ebay, and then again its still a risk. paypal is not on the sellers side!
