Nadac?

Excellent post - thank you Mike.

You're welcome. I just ordered the TP link gear I posted links to on the other thread. I'm going to test it with my NUC based streamer, and my Ravenna interface once I get it. The price is so low for this gear there's not much downside to trying it.

Andrew, running out of the house for a bit. When I get back I will address the optical link. And yes, I plan to do a write-up of my server build.

Yes - now to find it here. Amazon won' t ship most computer parts to Australia. Annoying.

FMC's, SFP transceivers and Startech Fibre NIC can be found here:

Many choices for cable here depending on length you require:

If using laptop for server, buy 2 FMC's. If using desktop with a free PCI-e slot, buy 1 FMC and 1 NIC. You will need 2 transceivers either way.

The FMC's come with a cheap supply, but if you want to upgrade, this is a good choice and these guys ship internationally fast and cheap. They are located in France. I've ordered stuff from them before and only took 1 week to Canada.

I recommend the supply upgrade only on the DAC end if you go with a dual FMC setup.

Eurodriver over at CompAudio forum did this like a year ago and reported extensively on it. Interest peaked at arond Munich time…May. The current direct server they are working on apparently kills the NAA with FMC/LPS isolation…the Sound Galleries server with colllab with Pink Faun.

Probably doesn't apply to NADAC use. The server tweaks will have no bearing on sound of the Ravenna interface if isolated by fiber.

If connected directly via USB or a PINK Faun I2S board maybe. The NAA system is for USB DAC's. Doesn't apply to this thread. But personally I wouldn't spend more than $250 on a device to interface a USB DAC to a server/GUI. Especially since interfaces like Ravenna will soon render USB obsolete.

Wow - you are a whizz and being extremely helpful. Thank you. I have ordered as suggested.

out of interest, will a Intel Core i5-6200U Processor (3MB Cache, up to 2.80GHz) be ok to run HQ Player/Roon math or would you recommend an Intel Core i7-6500U Processor (4MB Cache, up to 3.10GHz)?
If you can afford it and it fits in your system, go with the more powerful system. You will be able to do PCM>DSD256, if you like, more easily.

It might do it, but the less you have to make it work the better. I'd go for the I7. Especially since those are weak dual core laptop processors. Jussi at HQplayer may come up with better algorithms that require more CPU power. So if you're going to lean in any direction, lean towards more power.

Yes, I think I will just be done with it an build myself something quiet and cool, work out about the same cost as a laptop and infinitely higher performing.

Yes probably good idea if you know how to build computers. I was thinking about doing that for myself as well, as that's always what I've done in the past. Until I seen the cost of the processor and Windows 10 alone was almost the same as a turn key Dell or HP with Windows 10 pre-installed, if you catch a sale. Then you need the motherboard, power supply and case. So I figured they are just disposable anyways, no matter how fancy you build them, so why bother.

The fans are also quite quiet these days as they use bigger diameter blades that spin at lower RPM. Especially quieter when it's located in another room.

Yes, I picked up a Dell 2808 to try with the NADAC here.

Right on. Have you compared it with straight from the computer to the NADAC yet?

There was a guy on the Acourate forum who was saying different routers with the HAPI changed the sound. Here's what he said:

"It is very interesting to tune DELL switch itself as an audio device.
:) It changes sound with power line quality, and termination of vacant
LAN ports. In my country, there sold a switch that is made for audio
use! (Baffalo BSL-WS-G2108M/A) I also bought this switch, but I prefer
DELL's sound unfortunately."

Another reason why I'm thinking the optical isolation will make a difference.

Well oddly I reckon sound quality to my Nadac is best straight from my MBA rather than via my Airport Extreme .... when it works.

As you say Mike, another reason for fiber.

Hey if you think the i7 6550 is puny, try asking my MacBook Air (i5 1.3 Hz 4 Gb ram) to run the HQ Player math. It got fairly hot after a little while....

Yes - good point well made. But it won't take much for me to through something together, and I have a spare copy of W7 Pro lying around. If it was in another room I wouldn't care.

I tried my 2816 switcher on my MassCore and Native systems and also direct. No difference in sound, measured or subjective listening. If there is a difference, something is not configured correctly or something is broken!
