Jonathan Horwich started producing and engineering recordings over 50 years ago, starting IPI in 1981. Based in Chicago, he mostly records small jazz combos and solos to tape. For many years he offered copies of these recordings made directly from the original master tapes. Like the Opus3 tapes, these are as close to the original tapes as one can get. In addition, Jonathan also has recorded some classical recordings. He also has some older recordings going back more than 60 years which he did not record. In addition, he has made a small number of tapes, mostly from Premonition Records, which include several Patricia Barber recordings, which were made from original digital masters. Those recordings are at the top row right side of the first photo, with light colored labels on the spine (the left and center albums on that row are part of my rock/pop tape collection and some empty reel boxes. Jonathan uses very sturdy plastic cases (the same as used by ATR Services for their tapes).

I discovered Jonathan's tapes in 2013 and first ordered two tapes that he recorded in 1980 in Luxembourg. One was by Ravi Shankar and the other by classical pianist Mark Zeltser. Since then I have bought over 50 of Jonathan's tapes. He moved to Chicago and made many recordings at local Chicago area venues between 2012 and 2024, when he retired. The tapes feature fine performers, and excellent sound.

In early 2025, Evren Unger, based in Florida, has taken over distribution for IPI. You can email him at evren@internationalphonographinc.com for questions or ordering. You can buy direct master tape copies for $250 per one reel album (tapes that Jonathan recorded between 2012 and 2024, and second generation tapes. made from a copy of the master for $150. I don't see any of the Premonition Records (like Patricia Barber) currently available in the IPI Catalogue.

Jonathan also has provided high resolution digital copies of many of his recordings to High Definition Tape Transfers, www.highdeftapetransfers.ca.

Absolutely fantastic source! And most likely the only area where I might rival you. :)

Jonathan is a real asset and I send him my best wishes.

The Florida operation changed the label color... I would stay with the old one, if you ask me. Be it as it may, they have already produced several wonderful tapes.

I've never met Jonathan in person, but have had many phone calls over the years. He is my age (80) so well deserves his retirement. All serious tape collectors owe him a big debt of gratitude for both the quality and quantity of his recordings and the very affordable prices that he has consistently charged for his tapes. I only have one of the new Florida releases so the new yellow color stands out in my IPI collection. Larry
