Magico S5 2024 in the wild

I recently posted on the WestminsterLab Re-imagining Amplification thread (hyperlink to the post attached), my thoughts on the synergy between the Magico S5 2024 and the bridged version of the WestminsterLab Rei amplifier. The upgrade from the single chassis version of the Rei is something I have been eager to do since the S5 2024 arrived.

With the addition of the WADAX Studio Player and bridged Rei to the system, the S5 2024 is now the S5 2025. Very much enjoying how all these devices play together. The sum is greater than the parts.

Interesting pairing and nice find. What else have you tried on the S5s and how did they compare to the Westminster Rei? As an imaging hound, I am always looking for high current amplifiers not for volume or slam but for the way they can image and hold those images solidly in space. After having played around with Aries Cerat gear on the S5 I realize how the upper floor of the S5's capability is virtually unlimited and has an uncanny ability to be able to keep up with the accompanying equipment, no matter the league they are playing in...the S5 2024 is a scary capable speaker.

I agree wholeheartedly with your statement.

Regarding what other amps I tried with the S5, in my room, I have only used them with the WestminsterLab Rei amplifier (initially with the single chassis and now with the bridged version).

However, I have heard them paired with Boulder amps (extended listening at my local Magico dealer; 1162 & 2160), Block Audio, Pass Labs, McIntosh, Pilium and Soulution. The only time I heard them sound unacceptable was in a system at T.H.E. Show Costa Mesa, in June, 2024. The other times I heard them, at shows or in a dealer setting, they were impressive and each installation had its own unique sonic signature.

However, in addition to the sonic attributes of the amp, they must possess 2 essential physical qualities; one must be able to lift them without assistance and they can't be space heaters. The Rei satisfies my physical requirements while delivering the sonic attributes I value.

Soundings has the the S5 2024 paired with Boulder 1151s, MSB Cascade DAC and an 1100 series Boulder Pre. I spent some time this past week listening to this system with and without the Boulder Pre with a focus on demoing the new Boulder 1151s as possible new Class A SS amps. At moderate listening levels, it sounded very transparent, balanced across the full range, and overall very engaging to the point the Soundings team had to kick me out. A very enjoyable listening session.

I did prefer the MSB Cascade operating as the Pre over the Boulder 1100 series pre. I may be biased as an owner of the MSB Cascade.

At higher SPL, I noted some distortion and hash which I attribute to pushing the 1151s beyond their comfort zone, and maybe room acoustics. Since I listen at moderate listening levels with my own system and where this system seemed to excel, I found it to be quite pleasing and no where near analytical as I have heard all SS and particularly Boulder amps, are reported to sound. A great combo worth considering. I’ve never heard Westminster amps.

Both the Boulder 1151s and the Magico S5 2024s earned a spot on my very short list of future upgrades following that demo session with Soundings. I’m also considering EMM Labs MTRX2 V2, Vitus SM 103 Mk II, Block Audio SEs, seeking SS Class A that won’t overheat the room during warmer months and are reasonably portable by no more than two chumps, and one box per channel. For speakers, Zellaton Stage, Rockport Orions/Lryas, VS Ultra 7s, are in the mix.

That's where the S5's were purchased. Jeff and Jess have been excellent to work with. The MSB Cascade is remarkable. I am downsizing and the sonics, form factor and price point of the WADAX Studio Player is a perfect fit for me. Based on sonics alone, I could live with the MSB Cascade without hesitation.

I hope Soundings can get a Boulder 1162 into that system. IMO, the extra power is an essential asset with the S5. And with it's 30A power capability it might be something to consider as well (not certain but I think Soundings has 30A service in that listening room).

Regardless, all the amps you listed would likely be excellent partners for the S5. Of the list, I have heard the EMM Labs (not with the S5) and Block Audio SE and was duly impressed. Interesting array of speakers under consideration in terms of design and price. The Magico and Rockport speakers seem to have the most in common. Have fun with your project.
