I never used TONE CONTROL but now I wanted some less treble on 1 of my inputs. I followed the manual and it does not seem to work. I also did a factory reset. Actually the moment I press the tone button, the sound is muted. The happens on all input. The moment I activate tone control via fromt panel or remote the sound is muted. Sure I can set the +-12dB on treble and bass but when activated the sound stops.
Trimming the input strength or balance or mono/stereo..... all except tone control.
Who can help ?

Your amp needs to be serviced. The situation that you've described is not normal.

I'm not sure why McIntosh puts graphic equalizer controls beyond basic bass & treble controls on their preamp sections of their components.
McIntosh now has a new stand alone equalizer component: MQ112 Environmental Equalizer 8-band analog equalizer.
Must be a market for such a device..

Tone controls I find useful with regards to older recordings from 50+ years ago or more like: The Carter Family recordings from the late 1920's - 1930's or Big Band era from the 1940's.

I have a MA6500 integrated amp with just bass and treble controls. It's a excellent basic solid state amplifier integrated with a excellent basic solid state preamp and I use it with my Linn Sondek LP12 turntable for analog playback. There's a integrated MM phono section that comes with it but it's not very good in my opinion so I use a EAR Yoshino 324 solid state phono stage instead.

Because they work... and are a logical and sane approach to getting the music to an individuals liking.. as apposed to the insanity of using cables and interconnects (aka “ expensive tone controls”)... to do the very same thing.

Most people purchase IC's, speaker cables, and power cords to use as tone controls whether they realize it or not, albeit every expensive tone controls.
Tube rolling is another form of tone control.

McIntosh & Accuphase are the only high end brands that incorporate tone controls as a feature as far as I'm aware, FM Acoustics offers a equalizer of sorts.

I purchased the most neutral and transparent cabling and power cords that I could find for my 2 setups.
Everyone will have to make their own choices for their particular sound.

Happy Listening :)
