If you are tied of comic book characters and bad Christmas movies, you might enjoy first time director's Greta Gerwig's ode to her hometown of Sacramento
I thought this movie was great. Familiar territory, but fresh new way of spinning a coming of age story. Lots of depth to characters, funny wit, and contentious moments rolled into a 90 minute yarn.
Saorise Ronan and the mom will get nominations as will Greta Gerwig for screenplay. Ronan will be tough to beat this year, for sure but its early.
fwiw, theater was packed on a Tuesday night in LA - buzz is out on this one.
I guess I am a bit ambivalent about this movie. I liked it but like most other releases this year it was nothing special. I like Saoirse Ronan but at 23 she may have been a bit old to play a 17 year old. Good acting but not nearly as good as Brooklyn.
I was disappointed. There are much better coming-of-age movies. It was a snoozer for me but I can see how it might appeal to Millennials more than Boomers (soon to be known as "the Ancient ones")
