I went by my buddy's place to deliver a piano black case I made for his Olive music server. We spent the afternoon listening to some Bill Evans Trio on his 1500. It was a great way to spend some time recuperating from Thanksgiving.

The Technics has always had the best look of R2Rs. And this is no exception....

And they sound damn good too. The one in the Dolshi room at RMAF sounded great.

But Nick's deck wasn't stock either :)

Looks like an old H-K Citation 16 amp (or a couple of them) in Odyno's photo!

i've owned a couple of Technics; a stock RS-1500 i bought from J-Corder and an RS-1700 redone by Tim deParavicini. i do like their look and likely prefer it to other 'broadcast/pro-sumer' level decks.

however; there are are a number of higher level RTR decks that take build quality and asthetics to a much higher level.....the Studer A-820 and the Nagra 'T' come to mind. there are other master recorders which i'm sure have fans too.

i do respect the simple lines and elegant layout of the Technics; the wood side panels are a nice accent. tape motors are happiest in the horizontal position and most people use the Technics in the vertical mode as that works better logistically.

Yes I've thought about using the deck horizontally but the problem is that one needs a 90 degree PC to plug in the back then (unless one has a trolley or put it up on some tall isolation legs).

I ran a 1500 before getting my Tascam BR20. The Tascam is a much nicer deck.

My 1500 is getting more and more use these days :)

I enjoy the 1500 series for the ease of threading the tape. Also, flipping sides is a breeze. Sonically, they are a good performers.

The key to 1500's, the repro head should be upgraded (Nortronics Pro head for example) and it must be wired out to a tape preamp to avoid any of the poor stock electronics in the 1500. Once that is done, you pretty much have state of the art playback given a quality tape pre like the King/Cello. 1500's stock don't sound very good. A Studer A810 has better stock playback by a long shot.
