A basic CD transport? There's an idea that's time has passed. :) $1,000? I can't even imagine...

Nope, the time has not passed. Naim told a fellow reviewer who visited the factory 3 years ago and they told him
the XS series were their last CD players. Wel, huh, he went back this year, and they had entire section with CD players
being built. He asked and they said they could not make them fast enough.

There are so many audiophiles with stand alone DACs, that a purist transport has a market.

Oh, I'm sure it has a market. I'm just not sure it has a purpose. And I'm really just teasing. For those who are still more comfortable with putting a little silver disc in a slot and dealing with all the electro-mechanical issues inherent in real time playback from a rapidly spinning disc, I guess $1,000 is a pretty decent price.

It’s fun to read these old threads sometimes. It’s like a time capsule of what the future looks like for some people back then.

Indeed, back in 2013 when this thread originated, computer audio as the alternative was often still pretty lousy, with a rather synthetic sound. It has gotten so much better since and even can sound great now.

And just three months ago I bought a new CD transport, Jay's Audio CDT3 MK3. I'm loving it.

Good for you. I was an early adopter and have been using the Musical Fidelity M1CDT since this thread was created. It’s been paired with a Wadia DAC and now a Denafrips. It’s still spinning reliably and passing all the bits to the latest DACs faithfully. The new baby SMSL transports with external clock support are tempting. So affordable.

Good for you too. I had a Wadia 8 CD transport that lasted for 23 years, then since 2014 a Simaudio Moon 260 DT transport and now the Jay's Audio, my first transport with external clock support as well, which I use.
