As with all of my non-loudspeaker products, I only get into something when I find that what is available commercially does not satisfy. I've had a stable of cartridges that I rotate because none of them totally satisfy. The Transfiguration Proteus D was my favorite overall, but unfortunately is no longer available.

However, the Sonic X4 is not just my design. It has a lot of my inputs and nudges in the direction I wanted it to go, but it also has the cumulative set of ideas, ideals and desires that my partners at Hyper wanted. And combined, the four of us have over 150 years of shared knowledge and experience in music reproduction (including recording and music making).

We showed various prototypes at all previous shows that we participated in, and the final prototype was showed at the Pacific Audiofest in Summer. At the recent Capital Audiofest, the first production unit (Serial No. #001) had a few of my friends awestruck at what it could retrieve from vinyl grooves.

Making a phono cartridge for extreme performance, EVERYTHING matters. It was built by a renown Swiss cartridge maker to our extreme specifications. The Hyper Sonic X4 is a unique moving coil cartridge with a Multi-Layer Core. Combined with a new, stronger magnetic alloy shaped for better focus of magnetic flux, less coil-turns could be used for a given electrical output. (only 0.2mV output with 4 ohm impedance)

A stiff sapphire cantilever was chosen. This is inserted into a hardened titanium sleeve to transfer every micro-deflection generated by the micro-ridge stylus to the moving coil. This gives the Sonic X4 the ability to trace every minute detail of the grooves cut in the lacquer by the sharp cutter of the lathe. The generator is rigidly held in place relative to the interface to the tonearm with a titanium superstructure. The body is made of shot-peen surface hardened titanium. Three tungsten inserts are strategically placed to enhance the inertia stability of the cartridge and improve resonance damping.

Playing a reference lacquer cut by Bernie Grundman, and comparing to the 30ips master that he used to cut that lacquer, this is as good as it gets.

Any idea on price and availability. I’m in the market for a new cartridge and looking at alternatives to my usual Koetsu.

I saw it today at the HK dealer Forthwise's showroom. Price HK$ 140.000,- or US$ 18.000,-

Congratulations Gary, it took you a long time since you mentioned it during our trip to Guangzhou 4 years ago but the result looks stunning )
Best regards, Peter

Everything took longer than we thought.... But I am very pleased with the results. The combination of low impedance and low output means that it is unfortunately very demanding on the phonostage matching. Hence, we are considering a higher-output higher-impedance version for lower-gain/higher-noise phonostages.

How would it pair with my Genesis phono pre-amp? Is it available in BKK?

The Sonic X4 is now playing in our new showroom. It is in use with a Graham Elite, TechDAS AF3 PS and Jorma XLR phono cable. The phonostage is the CH Precision P10 and the rest is CH L10 and M10 running mono into Marten Coltrane Quintets. (digital is Taiko, C10, D1.5, T1)

As old timers to the forum know I'm a bit of a cartridge hound and that my personal taste has Koetsu (platinum/stone/diamond) and Matsudaira-san designed cartridges as my go to's. As my analog diet is mainly classical music and jazz from the sixties my cartridge choices are those that have a spread out and fleshed out presentation that minimally mic'ed recordings inherently have and thus should be presented. Low noise and excellent tracking is imperative.

I tried a few gain settings but ultimately the factory 18dB default of the P10 IV conversion balanced input was the most .....errrrmmmm.....balanced. Notes danced around like ballerinas with the strength and grace that that implies. Marten loudspeakers are extremely good at low level nuance and this analog front end has that in spades. In my experience, microdynamic excellence creates greater contrast to macrodynamic events making the latter more impactful reflexively and emotionally. The Sonic X4 reminds me of my Lyra Atlas SL with the grunt of my Lyra Atlas with the delicacy of my Koetsu Singer's Stone.

While I haven't tried the X4 with a voltage drive, I can as of now very highly recommend it to anybody using the CH transconductance circuits. I think it would be safe for me to say this would work very well with other current drive head stages as well.

Installation has been quite a bit late coming as life got in the way but here it is. I should have gotten into it sooner for my own benefit and pleasure. Oh well, no use looking back on lost time.

Congratulations and thanks to the Hyper team for this 24k Gold nugget. If I had an extra thumb it would be up with the other two.

@JackD201 Great that you finally set up your new showroom. Coincidentally, we used a similar set-up for the Northern AV Show in Penang, Malaysia last month. Techdas AF3 Premium, Graham Elite and CH Precision P1. That sounded fabulous and we got numerous Best in Show.

That is quite a coincidence indeed Gary! How have you been my friend?

Hi Jack, it's been a tough few years, and the chaos right now is pretty incredible. I have a new entry-level line of speakers that is entirely US-built that had good traction until the tariffs. We have a brand new album that is in the final stages of production - a big band album that shows off just how great the X4 is with minimal compression and unlimited dynamics. But pressed and printed in the USA.... so tariffs have affected pre-orders.

So, I've been busy!!

Great to hear Gary! Next get a "PH Visa" and come over ;)

I just ordered the vinyl of Spielberg's West Side Story. I needed something to explore the X4's performance bandwidth from spoken word to full orchestra in one production to keep as much equal as possible for the evaluation.

I really admired what you accomplished with the Claire Marlo album and I can't wait to hear the big band project you are working on.

Hopefully the global trade issues find balance very soon. SME's need to catch a break. Your bamboo speakers look very interesting.
