I just discovered this forum a few days ago. Nice to find some objectivist audiophiles here.
I've been interested in good sound to make great music more enjoyable since the late '60s. my first decent system included a cheap Garrard turntable, a Dynaco SCA-35 integrated (tube) amp and AR4x speakers. As my finances improved, i got better gear but never the most expensive stuff.
I was not fond of tube gear and I quit playing LPs long ago. I transferred my CD collection and a few LPs to Flac files about 4 years ago. My files are tagged the way I want them and everything is properly backed up. My system is quite stable and I have no glitches and no drama.
I rely on the library management in the J. River Media Center player I use to remember what I own so that I don't have to. Browsing in my collection on my PC screen is much more enjoyable than going through CDs ever was.
My education was in chemistry and I did my graduate work writing and using computer software for molecular quantum mechanics. That led me to earn a living writing computer software - mostly real-time and operating system software. I've written drivers for audio and video devices. The regular advances in computer hardware capability made writing software an open frontier during my career and it was work and hobby for me.
I am attracted to PC based music playback because it fits both my interest in audio interest and my interest for computer software.
