I just discovered this forum a few days ago. Nice to find some objectivist audiophiles here.

I've been interested in good sound to make great music more enjoyable since the late '60s. my first decent system included a cheap Garrard turntable, a Dynaco SCA-35 integrated (tube) amp and AR4x speakers. As my finances improved, i got better gear but never the most expensive stuff.

I was not fond of tube gear and I quit playing LPs long ago. I transferred my CD collection and a few LPs to Flac files about 4 years ago. My files are tagged the way I want them and everything is properly backed up. My system is quite stable and I have no glitches and no drama.

I rely on the library management in the J. River Media Center player I use to remember what I own so that I don't have to. Browsing in my collection on my PC screen is much more enjoyable than going through CDs ever was.

My education was in chemistry and I did my graduate work writing and using computer software for molecular quantum mechanics. That led me to earn a living writing computer software - mostly real-time and operating system software. I've written drivers for audio and video devices. The regular advances in computer hardware capability made writing software an open frontier during my career and it was work and hobby for me.

I am attracted to PC based music playback because it fits both my interest in audio interest and my interest for computer software.

Welcome to the forum Bill. Would be great to have a write up on J River btw ;) :). We have had some member mentions but not much.

BTW, I started my OS experience writing drivers too. I am going to date myself by saying my first driver was for 8 inch floppy drives! Next was Reel-to-Reel (data) tape drives like you see in old science fiction movies. The latter cost $50K from what I recall in 1982 dollars!!!

Welcome to the forum Bill.

Where in the Bay area are you as we have many members of the forum in the Bay Area as well as our Bay Area Audio Society

I'm careful about putting personal details in forum messages. Will Central Contra Costa County be an adequately precise description?

Bill

Heck Bill

That's where I am

I bet if you peer over your back fence you might find me as your neighbor

Let me know if you would like to attend our BAAS meetings

Well, you'll have to open your windows and crank up the volume for me to hear your system.

> Let me know if you would like to attend our BAAS meetings

I'd be interested in knowing when and where the meetings occur and what the content of the meetings is.

Only agenda is to listen to music.

Bill, see here for observations from a former BAAS virgin. :)
