Aloha!
Originally from the Reno/Truckee area, grew up with a living room Magnavox console. Liked playing records and one day, the grown ups went to the local electronics/home light/TV store and were talking to the salesman. He said something about a sapphire stylus being 'better' than what they brought in, and they went for it. They also tested some tubes - the store had a 'machine' for that, and they got a couple.
When we got home, things did indeed sound better! (Well replacing worn out tubes and stylus can do that!)
That was that and here I am.
Following the path of Hi Fi, I have found for myself that no Hi Fi, no matter how good or spendy, has ever successfully maintained any illusion of me actually being in the presence of live music. Hi Fi systems invariably fail to maintain that illusion. Which is fine, just like I celebrate a good disc golf shot (it might not have gone into the basket, but I can celebrate something that "failed," in a better way than it could have!)
Two of my life lessons from Hi Fi (and relationships)....
1) If something makes a too outlandish impression upon my first encounter, it often masks fatal flaws that I figure out later.
2) Sometimes, 'different' is just as fun as "better.'
If anyone is ever in the environs of greater Chico, we will pour you wine, make some food, and honor your presence!
